Amari Palm Reef Resort
A fine 5-star choice

What we say:
For the money, the Amari is excellent value, and we found the staff to be excellent - knowledgable and extremely friendly. The deluxe rooms are across the road from the beach, in a series of three-storey buildings nestled in exquisite grounds. When we visited in May 2006 the beachside portion of the resort was under renovation. Rooms are immaculate and stylish, with a very spacious and thoughtful modern layout. Take your pick between two large pools, with the one further from the beach attached to the Sivara Spa and a longish walk from some rooms. If you go for a deluxe, specify a second-storey room as they are more private and have better views.

Eh, this didn't impress me.
I'm very fussy about my five stars, and if I'm paying the price, I expect impeccable service and accommodations. The Amari didn't live up. For the difference in price between the Lamai Wanta and the Amari, the Amari was sorely lacking. From an air-con unit that never quite cooled the room to hotel staff that varied greatly in friendliness and customer service, everything seemed a little half-assed.
