Overlooking Haad Sairee and the clear waters of the gulf, peaceful Sun Lord provides a range of bungalows ideal for travellers who want to escape the crowds at Sairee but have its dining options and activities within reach. Accommodation ranges from very simple wooden huts to large concrete bungalows with hot water but all come with spectacular views as the huts are spaced for privacy along the rocky hillside. Some of the huts, which are available with or without private showers, are fairly weathered and worn inside and out, so see if you can check a few before deciding on one. A stony path leads to rocky water access where the snorkelling can be very good. The family running Sun Lord is friendly, and their terrace restaurant serves good and authentic Thai food with more incredible views and often plays traditional Thai music.

Awkward host
Plus points: beautiful views, quiet location, away from the noise and touristy strip of the beach. Negatives: denied the usual transfer from the ferry (the hill climb is not for the faint hearted, especially with a backpack), the extra bed organised was the padding from a sun lounger with no sheets, the restaurant didn't serve food (even a simple breakfast seemed a hardship and was non-existant a day later). Beautiful, quiet location, but that doesn't make up for awkward host and burning calves.
