Quiet, scenic spot near the river
Nestled about 100 metres off the main access road, Baan Khao Sok was our top budget to flashpacker pick for its winning combination of simple but tastefully comfortable rooms at reasonable prices, scenic, shady grounds beside the gently babbling Sok River, and sincere, family run atmosphere.
Rooms come in two forms and all are situated far apart from one another amidst many trees and tropical plants. Budget bamboo bungalows are small and simple with fans, basic hot water bathrooms, comfortable twin beds draped in mosquito nets, several windows, and small but cute front porches with bamboo chairs. A bit further away from the river out in the trees are their wooden tree houses with spiral staircases, large front porches, and spacious rooms with comfortable raised double beds with mosquito nets, woven bamboo walls, fans, large, clean hot water bathrooms, and more than enough tall windows for letting in the breeze. Some of the more basic bungalows looked to be in need of some fixing up, while the treehouses we saw were clean and in good condition. We liked the restaurant here a lot – set under a vaulted and well crafted thatch roof, with some extra touches like fresh cut flowers in vases on the tables. It has the feel of a relaxed family room with kids of the staff flopped out watching TV and cats and dogs running through. The resort arranges tours of the area, and the staff here are friendly and pleased to help. It's best to book ahead as this place often fills up, especially in the dry months from December to March. Campers are welcome to set up their tents on the lawn next to the restaurant for a small fee. Free WiFi is available in the restaurant.
