Panviman Resort Koh Phangan
For big spenders only

What we say:
For big spenders only, Panviman Resort is one of the most luxurious -- and expensive -- places around. Those on any kind of budget, you're best to look elsewhere, but for upscale travellers, this place is among the most posh and luxurious on the island. The rooms, ranging from hotel style to personal cottages for families scattered along the palm-fringed hillside and super fancy suites, are all very well equipped, large and comfortable. Just about every modern convenience is provided in every room, and the swimming pool, jacuzzi and full service spa make it all the better. A canal -- too keep the riff raff away -- separates the resort from the rest of the beach, but a private strip of sand, really only suitable for sunbathing, lies on the resort side surrounded by boulders. The small, swanky Stone Beach Restaurant is not priced as astronomically as the rooms and dishes out some lovely seafood and fancier fare.

Superb, and bargains are possible
This place is superb, and we actually ended up getting upgraded to a deluxe villa, which for 4,000 baht a night inc. taxes is probably one of the best travel bargains I have had in my life. If you book directly on the website you can get some great bargains at the moment, and I think it is why we got upgraded. We had floor to ceiling sea views, a huge bed, automatic light controls, gigantic bath, huge terrace, the works. Breakfast is in a beautiful room with nearly all tables having a direct sea view next to your table, and a great range of buffet options including fresh pancakes. There are also various other facilities like a spa, cooking courses etc. which are overpriced but all seemed to offer big discounts. There are a few negatives: - I wasn't overly impressed by the beach restaurant - it cost a lot more than nearby places (although still within normal price ranges for Thailand), portions were small and it is only really the setting which makes it worth it. The thai-lao restaurant in the village is one of the best and also cheapish. - The staff are incredibly polite, but probably too much so for me as I only occasionally stay in this level of accommodation, and a lot of it felt very trained rather than genuine - The beach is beautiful but the southern half is dominated by sunbeds for the 3 luxury resorts, which makes it hard to sit anywhere aside from your own resort
