Barcelona Resort
Great spot

What we say:
Barcelona's bungalows occupy an expansive stretch of hillside overlooking Haad Yuan. Several rows of stilted wooden bungalows sit at various elevations, all with at least some view. The rooms come with or without bathrooms and both options are clean and well-kept. The crowd here is young and very relaxed and the staff amiable. The units with shard bathrooms have a classic island design while the larger ones with private facilities look almost colonial and have much more space and offer more comfort inside. The partially-shaded hillside is a fine place to swing on a hammock and enjoy the view and breeze, and the beach is great for swimming or sunbathing. Sadly, the restaurant is mediocre and has little charm, but Barcelona remains a popular choice.

Not impressed
We currently live in Surat Thani, but this was our first trip to Haad Yuan. Our co-workers had told us to try Ocean Rock or Big Blue, but unfortunately both were booked up (which was strange because we didn't see many people anywhere). The only room we could find for our first night was at Barcelona. They didn't have any bungalows left, so a ''fan room'' was the only thing they had for us. It was 500 baht, which was a little more than we wanted to pay, but we didn't really have a choice. The view from the back shared patio area was amazing; right on the rocks over the water. However, everything else was not amazing. The toilet seat wasn't connected to the toilet and just fell off whenever it was touched, the window locks slid down if you didn't jam them up into the wooden holes, the mosquito net was positioned so that if you put it down it covered half of the bed, and there was NO FAN. Unfortunately we discovered this when it was time to go to sleep, so there wasn't much we could do about it. Thankfully Big Blue had a room for the rest of our stay and we bailed. Also, they want you to eat at the restaurant, which is understandable because it's a big source of their income. We went to eat lunch there and the guy came to ask what we wanted. My husband asked if a pizza was big enough for 2 people and the guy snapped at him and half yelled ''I don't know! Are you hungry?'' and then stomped away. Needless to say we didn't eat there. Also, compared to the other restaurants on the beach, this one has a bit of a dingy bar feel rather than a relaxing beach getaway feel. Skip this place if you can. Ocean Rock had amazing views, but they were booked up. It's perilous walk, but if you don't mind being off the beach it's great. I live in Thailand so I know what a 500 baht a night room on the beach should be like. This isn't it.

cheap and sweet!
Cheapest, clean place in haad yuan, and a nice getaway from the beach commotion. Many of the bungalows are up along the mountain side off the beach, with views to die for! They don't clean bungalows, change sheets or take your garbage, so beware. But, thats common for most cheap places. It is worth it though! The restaurant is average, but they have great ice-cream!

Good Value
After staying at the Sanctuary which is really lovely but quite pricey, Barcelona was a pleasant change. One big difference though was the noise - of longboats arriving all hours of the night. The staff were helpful and the bungalows clean enough. We didn't eat in the restaurant there (except one breakfast which was very average) as there is a fantastic restaurant called the Bamboo Hut to the north of the beach on the rocks overlooking the bay.

Fell in love
Stayed here for about a week after completeing my month of Thai boxing at Horizon. I absolutley love this place, i had some of the most amazing times here, the staff are excellent, Boon is just a big bundle of fun and smiles and when we where there they had gorgeous litter of puppies running around. Diosagree with the comment about the restaurant, at night the place is happening, in a chilled out kinda way. Stay here if you can!
