Why Nam Hut

Why Not!

What we say: 4 stars

Why Nam is the only setup on this peaceful little cove, and is possibly the most tranquil spot on all of Ko Pha Ngan — an ideal cluster of simple bungalows along the southern side of the beautiful bay.

The sand is a little coarse and the sea floor rocky, but the swimming is great — even at low tide — and the tranquility makes Why Nam well worth checking out, especially for those looking for a more laid-back, longer-stay type of place. It’s just a short walk from Haad Thian, close enough to munch away on Sanctuary’s excellent food, but far enough to insulate you from the racket of the Friday night party on that bay.

Restaurant to hang out in, rope swing to, umm, swing on.

The basic fan-cooled, cold-water bungalows are staggered at various elevations privately spaced along the hillside and behind the restaurant. They’re of a good size, with hammocks, a couple of chairs on the deck and a wall fan (electricity in the evening only). Mattresses are firm, but the bedding — at least in our bungalow — has seen better days, though that’s a minor gripe. Plenty of shelving will please those wanting to play house and the bathrooms, while simple (bucket-flush Western toilet, cold-water shower) are clean. WiFi is available via a rather pricey (starts at 100 baht for 100 meg!) coupon purchased from Sanctuary on Haad Thian.

Simple fare. Fabulous views.

Simple facilities. Fabulous views.

The outlook is spectacular, with great views out to the sunrise and down into the beautiful bay. We spent a very comfortable afternoon on our balcony watching travellers float their afternoon away, while, further out, monitor lizards swam back and forth between their favourite sunning stones.

Good morning!

Good morning!

There will often be a yoga teacher staying here and there is a well placed cliffside yoga platform on the southern edge of the bay that’s available for solo practice and classes. Those participating in the local fasting fad may be charged slightly more given they’ll not be eating at the comfortable beachside restaurant.

I'd have made a bar here, but yoga will do.

Under new US management, Why Nam Huts is working hard to retain an old-school traveller vibe and many of the guests are long stayers and repeat annual visitors. The crowd is perhaps a little older than what you may find in the two bays to the south.

Fodder for lazy days.

Why Nam doesn’t accept reservations in advance, rather you just need to show up with your fingers crossed that a hut will be available. If you’re looking for a beautiful beach with an ol- school Ko Pha Ngan vibe and don’t need too many creature comforts, this is it.
