Thong Nai Pan Beach/Raiwin Resort
Ugly and overpriced

What we say:
Thong Nai Pan Beach Resort, AKA Raiwin Resort and Spa, is so classy they had to name it twice. In reality, the exotic new name is largely a pretext to charge a lot of money and compete with more luxurious upscale operations on this beach. To be fair, the peach-coloured concrete bungalows are quite spacious, well-equipped and immaculately clean. Nonetheless, this place is not as fancy as the name or the prices might suggest. Only three bungalows sit on the beach, while many more are packed together in rows heading inland, with a few bordering the small swimming pool. The restaurant and reception try to keep up the image as well, though the staff are less committed than one would expect. The beach restaurant has an impersonal, sterile feel and charges above average prices, although the food is quite good, specialising in steak and seafood.

How to destroy a beautiful beach
How to destroy a beautiful beach: Bring in the bulldozers, remove all the trees and build concrete bungalows that doesn't blend in with the nature at all. Please don't stay here !

We liked it
We moved to Thong Nai Pan Beach Resort from next door (Thong Ta Pan). It had air-con, was only 1000B, spacious rooms, good shower, clean bathroom, nice deck, and even though it didn't fit in with the other tranquil huts, hey, it was great! the pool was good for a day's break from the beach and the food good too. No complaints!

How to destroy a 'nice place'
This is a terrible blemish on the otherwise pristine beach of Thong Nai Pan Noi. The owners have apparently moved in from Samui and decided to do things 'Samui-style' ie. great views from your veranda into the neighbouring bungalow. Apparently one of the first things these guys did was to cut down all the palm trees, so they could cram more bungalows onto the land. I wish the rainy season could wash this rubbish away, and back to Chaweng (Samui) where it belongs. Please support the local environment of Ko Pha Ngan and don't stay here!

Nice Place
The units themselves are great -- clean, large, new, nice bathrooms. The atmosphere is a little lacking compared to Star Huts, but I met plenty of people along the beach and in the bars and restaurants. I pretty much used it as a place to sleep, and hung out with other backpackers elsewhere. I paid 500B. It's not exactly an eyesore, but it is a little gourmet for a backpacker (especially for Ko Pha Ngan), which I guess is a turn-off to some. Besides, most of the time you are looking at the water anyway. And since it was only a few baht more, I found it to be a nice splurge.
