Mae Haad View Resort
Last basic backpacker haven

What we say:
A lagoon/sandy ditch sits between the beach and Mae Haad View and only a handful of their small huts — the cheapest in Mae Haad — provide a sea view through the trees and shrubs lining the lagoon. All rooms are the same price regardless of position, and they're all the same size and quality — small and rudimentary. But they do have an authentic Ko Pha Ngan backpacker vibe, which is becoming a rarity on the island. The very basic, wooden affairs smell of mildew, the linens are aging, and there are large gaps between many floorboards. The attached Rolling Stoned beach bar is adorable, and totally old skool Pha Ngan with Bob Marley and driftwood galore. If you're on a shoestring but looking for a good time this is the best choice on Mae Haad. A good range of vegetarian options in the restaurant and a campfire and barbeque are also nice additions to a very basic but character-full backpacker operation.

okay so it's a little rustic - the food is fabulous! In fact, the food is so good it's worth roughing it - the dining room is right on the beach, each night the fisherman would bring in their catch to the owner and he would select the best of what they had - the crowd is youngish and European, mostly, but everybody was so friendly - it was the most fun I'd had in a long time - no pressure - volleyball in the sand in the afternoons, or just swim in the water which is so clear you can see the bottom - and when everybody wanted to go to the Full Moon Party, Mr. Veera, the owner, took us all! Even when one gentleman got stupid and ended up arrested, Mr. Veera went down and got him out! Mr. Joey runs the Same,Same Bar next door (Same,Same - but different) which is lots of fun, too, and Mrs. Veera will do your laundry so beautifully, you'll wonder how you've lived all these years without her - for a very cool time, or for just hiding out, do yourself a favor and book a little hut now - I know there are fancier resorts with air conditioning and lots of rules, but if you're trying to save a little on accomodations and want to be part of Mr. & Mrs. Veera's extended family, it's a place you'll often think about and want to return to - dining room has a full bar, and pool tables; I can't wait to go back.

do not believe all you read on Travelfish
I have stayed at Mae Haad View a number of times now, the last time being April '06 and I am disappointed by the write up here on travelfish. How many bungalows on Koh Pha Ngan are still 250 baht? What do you expect for 250 baht? For your money you will get to stay with maybe the friendliest and most generous family in Thailand. You will have lush, thick, noisy jungle as your backdrop - not scary, drugged up kids like in Haadrin. You can actually watch your fish being caught early evening by a member of the family, so you know it's as fresh as it can be. I have been to Thailand many times and stayed in many different places, but the hospitality shown by the family at Mae Haad is second to none. You feel safe and relaxed and you know you are getting what you pay for. You will find many people who come here are on their 2nd, 3rd, 6th visit and often stay here for months on end. I, for one, come to Thailand to have a basic hut, with a hose pipe for a shower - which is taken under the stars. I like having to find my way back to my hut from the one and only bar at 2am through almost silent pitch black with only the inhabitants of the lush greenery causing a racket. If you want a modern bungalow with AC, why not stay in Haadrin - which for that matter, why not just stay on Samuii?!

Love it
My girlfriend and I have been to Thailand three times ... and we keep coming back here every time. Sad, I know, but it's run by the most lovely and friendly family who make it all worthwhile and relaxing, is very quiet (we've had the place to ourselves several times) and they have amazingly good food. The huts are dead cheap, too, although very elementary -- don't come here if you want air-con, a library and a flush toilet. There are more "amazing" (i.e. sculpted) landscapes/beaches, but it's still very pretty. And you'll more likely than not have the beach and sea to yourself. Not the place to go if you want noise and nightlife. Perfect if you want relaxation and solitude...
