Tantawan Bungalow
Simple and super relaxed

What we say:
Tantawan is a super laid-back place with a comfortable atmosphere. A two-level restaurant and bar with mellow music and cushy seating make for a cool spot to hang out, and there are large hammocks and plenty of seating around the good-sized swimming pool. The beach is a bit of a trek, but it's easy to spend the whole day here relaxing. The wooden bungalows are of varying size and are relatively simple but well-kept and comfortable. While the smallest huts are affordable, the larger units here are a tad overpriced, not offering air-con or much else than more space and furniture. The French and Thai owners are very hospitable and their restaurant, though a little pricey, offers a nice break form the norm with French and other European specialties. Definitely a groovy spot of you're travelling in a group or can get into one of the cheaper rooms.

Skip it unless you like steep hikes and rip-off rooms - and DONT make a deposit
Notice how their website deceivingly makes it look like this is actually on or near the beach - not so. Up a very steep hill on the other side of the road away from the beach. Yeah, the view is pretty, but not worth the hike. Rooms were small, dark, and very basic. The pool had a team of workers hammering away at the tiles when I was there. Because it was around Christmas, we made the mistake of booking in advance and making a deposit of 2 nights - which was requested by the owner. When we got there and saw the room, the distance from the beach, and the construction on the 'pool', we asked to have the second night deposit returned, offering to pay for the first even though we weren't going to stay. The owner laughed in our faces (of course). Then she wanted us to hand in the key - i guess so she could re-rent the room! Since I had already paid, I said she'd get her key back in two days. We found a way better place right on the beach for about half the price. Much bigger room with AC, big bathroom, and a big balcony. We were in number 1, about 15 feet from the water's edge. I forget the name but it was to the right of Silver beach. The lady that runs it also runs a little convenience store and that's where you can book it. AVOID Tantawan - you will be disappointed.

Buggy
If you like dark, cramped, dirty bungalows with vast numbers of mosquitoes, this is the place for you. Surly staff and an air of neglect add to the ambience, then there's the long, long walk to the beach. Give it a miss and stay on the beach where there are several places with better value.

Quiet
Basic bungalows, bit on the small side, no wardrobe but plenty of hooks along the walls. Not ''easy access'' since it takes 160 steps to the top bungalow but the peace and quiet -- especially during half moon parties -- makes it worth it. You have to cross the street and walk down to get to the beach. Our room smelled a bit musty, had no mosquito nets. Staff was okay but not overly welcoming or friendly. Great plus is the reasonably sized pool with a view over the ocean. Also very nice dining area, decorated with shell strings, although the food is better elsewhere.
