Spa Samui Resort
The original Samui health spa

What we say:
The original health spa retreat on Ko Samui now has a second branch up in the hills behind the beach, and for fasters, that's the better choice as it is quieter and doesn't have the distractions of the popular-with-non-fasters beach property. The accommodation is a mix of hotel style rooms and small a-frame bungalows sitting around the very pleasant pool -- of the two, the hotel accommodation is far better value and is also a good deal than the small, and rather dark a-frames. As a fasting location, Spa Samui is the longest-running centre and certainly has a large number of fans but some detractors. We've not fasted here, but friends have and the reports range from mixed to lacklustre -- particularly regarding the lack of support and assistance for newcomers to fasting. Our recommended fasting location is the Wellness Centre on Ko Pha Ngan (so long as Moon is there) but if you are doing a pre-fast on Ko Samui, you should be eating at Spa Samui three times a day! The food here remains excellent.

Not for Everyone
And probably not for us either. Most folks come to Spa Beach for a cleansing, but after we decided to opt out of the fasting program, we felt a little out of place here, and, for the record, hanging out with a bunch of folks who aren't eating anything isn't as much fun as you might think. The beach out front is rocky and flat, which means you'll need to walk a good 500 meters for a swim. Plus, and most importantly, even though it is the guests that come here to clean things out, it is the staff that really needs a good enema, as they are overall unfriendly and entirely full of themselves. The staff also does not speak English nearly as well as they think or well as they need to assist guests with the fasting programs, and, as noted above, the support for 1st time fasters isn't what it needs to be. There were positives associated with our stay however. We had one of the old beach hut-style bungalows on the south end of the property, and paid only 500 baht per night for a room with a large bed, hot shower, and lots of space. Best of all was the room safe, which meant that we were free to wander the beach with passports, cash, etc. safely locked up in our room. The restaurant also offers a great range of creative veggie and vegan foods, and although they are a bit pricey, still offer an excellent value for what you get. We also stayed at Spa Village for a few nights. Our 900 baht fan room had a hot shower, TV with very limited channels, room safe, and a small deck, and while not quite the value we got at Spa Beach, it was still good. The water pressure here was the best I've ever seen in Thailand. Both locations also have a good pool for swimming and relaxing, and the free hourly shuttle between the two locations made getting back and forth easy. A few things, like a daily morning meditation program, are offered at no additional charge, but most others, including a 250 baht yoga class, cost extra. In fact, that is our biggest knock against the place - the feeling that apart from the good values for the rooms, services were overpriced, and the emphasis of the Spa seemed to be getting every single baht it could from us.
