New Hut
A very popular traveller's haunt

What we say:
The long-running and misnamed New Hut is old but still great value. They have basic A-frame huts with share bathroom on offer and for the price you can't really complain even though the share bathrooms could do with a serious spruce up. This is a very popular traveller's haunt and in-season is typically full, so try to call ahead for a room if possible as they no longer take reservations by email. The beach here gets runoff from the nearby creek, but walk fifty metres along and you'll be fine. A very friendly spot, with a good and very popular restaurant with large servings.

Still the same??
Unbelievable...I can't believe the lady owner of new hut is still the same. I had a similar experience a long time ago, and have heard similar reports since. I believe they're even mentioned in well known travel books for people having bad experiences. Nevermind... beer hut nearby nad also no name bungalow are really friendly and cheap, and definately reccommended.

money stolen
We have just spent 5 nights in Lamai Beach and it is a beautifull part of the Island. This part of the island is virtually free of boats and jet-skies etc making for clean and clear water to swim in, as was the beach itself also very clean. Our time at New Hut, while it was in a beautiful location was ruined at the last minute when we had 700B stolen from a pair of shorts that were drying on the line outside our hut during check-out. Despite the fact we were sitting eating breakfast in the restaurant the cleaning staff took them and when we asked for help to find them the waitress brought them back from the kitchen. We imediately realised the money had been stolen and when this was pointed out to the staff, they suddenly lost all ability to understand or speak english. one workman who claimed to own New Hut refused to do anything about it, saying we should take it up with the cleaner as she was new and it wasn't his problem. After threats to call the police and being shouted at we decided that it was best just to pay our bill and leave. However, we said we would not be giving New Hut a good review. In responce, my boyfriend was told to ''go f**k her(me) in the river and maybe you find your money'' very loundy infront of the other guests. He continued to rant and swear as we left. We will never go back to New Hut but we would recomend anyone to stay at one of the many other resorts along Lamai Beach.

nice, friendly place on a good location
We, two girls of 29, stayed here for 5 nights. We loved the place; nice bungalows on the beach, nice people to hang out with en good food at the restaurant.

ripped off
maybe this place has changed management since and I hope so. We suffered serious problems with the management. When we arrived we were happy with the price and because of this I recommended the place to a group of travellers we met in a bar. They checked in the next day, stayed a couple of days but left without paying for the room. The crazy lady who ran the place seemed to think I should pay because I'd recommended the place to them. I refused obviously, but all of two minutes later a policeman (obviously on her payroll) arrived. He ''confiscated'' my luggage and passport and I was forced to pay to get them back. I left then and the crazy woman threw stones at me. i checked in next door at beer's house which was much better although the new house woman would still scream abuse whenever she saw me. I stayed another 2 weeks on Lamai and heard some other similar stories about new hut.

Good low budget option
We actually stayed at the bungalows next door, though went pretty often to the New Hut in order to get a bite to eat. The A shaped Bungalows looked fine to me (kind of a tent, only larger and more stable)- and the food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and quite tasty :)

Highly reccomended
I've stayed there in September 2004, the place is an ideal spot on the beach for backpackers and got a very nice restaurant
