What we say: 4 stars

Located along the road leading from the pier and village to the beaches and resorts on the west coast, Bahn Dang is a refreshing alternative to the larger resorts. It's a good 10-minute walk to the beach, but Bahn Dang's mid-sized rustic bamboo bungalows with attached cold-water bathrooms are great value. They each stand on stilts with a good sized front porch for lounging, and they're painted in an oddly attractive yellow-brown pattern. Inside, they feature firm but comfortable beds on the floor, mosquito netting and fans. Not much English is spoken, but the owners will do whatever they can to make your stay comfortable, and the restaurant is far cheaper and better than the more popular resorts. It's a family-run place that borders on a homestay experience, so expect kids and cats to be running around and lots of local neighbours stopping by throughout the day. There's no sign in English, but the Thai language sign includes a colourful photo of a traditional round hotpot, and you can't miss the yellow-brown colour scheme. Recommended.
