Sandwiched between Sandy Beach to the south and the Furama Resort to the North, Hoa's Place stands out as the single option for budget travellers wanting to stay on the sand. Thankfully, it's not a bad choice. Though the basic rooms are dingy, the mattresses hard, and the blankets a bit bare, this is overshadowed by the friendliness of Hoa, the owner. Fluent English-speaking Hoa (pronounced 'hwa') is a local institution, who came of age during the war and learned his English from American soldiers -- his speech is still peppered with slang from the 1960s. His small, family-run guesthouse is within steps of both the Marble Mountains and a practically deserted stretch of beach. While he only has a couple of rooms, Hoa serves as the manager for all the accommodation in the area (he and his wife are the only ones who speak English), and can easily arrange a room for you in one of the adjoining guesthouses. The rates are best described as variable and Hoa can cater to strict budget travellers if you don't mind sharing a room. Evening meals are communal, every night at 19:00 -- very popular and a great way to meet fellow travellers. Time and time again, Travelfish users have informed us that they showed up here planning to stay a few days and stayed a week. We've received a number of reports that booking requests to Hoa's by email tend to go unanswered, so you're probably best to just show up or telephone ahead.

* Travelfish researchers visit and review properties on an anonymous basis. By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. Excellent hospitality - 7th June, 2008
Staying here was exactly what we needed after visiiting so many busy coastal towns.
Hoas Place is almost on the beach. While the accomodation is basic the family dinners encourage you to meet fellow travellers and create a great atmosphere.
Hoa and his wife are very hospitable. Great characters to meet.
We left sad that we couldn't stay and relax longer but with big grins on our faces.

Eskil - 4th March, 2007
My wife, our kids (16, 17) and I stumbled upon Hoa's place by accident. Really neat! Once you check in, you won't want to check out. Hoa is a gentleman´s gentleman. He makes you feel right at home. This is backpackers heaven!!! Wonderfull beach. Hoa's famous pancakes and the evening family dinner are not to be missed! (I did get the recipe for his pancakes...). Now we're back home in Sweden and wish we were back at Hoa's where the motto is: ''CHILL!''

Quiet spot - a rarity in Vietnam - 15th January, 2007
If you've had too much of tooting horns and roaring motorbikes, this is the place to be. It's cheap, basic and quiet. The owner is a nice guy and the location is close to perfect. This is way better than staying at the Furama! Dinner is communal and would probably be ''exotic Asian'' by Westerners' standards - still, it's good value for the money.

chillaxing - 9th September, 2006
this was a great few days that just kept being extended. beach is deserted--have books with you as there is nothing there to buy. rooms are basic but clean. food at hoa's is reasonable in price and tasty. plan the family dinner at night-- a great tasting meal in a communal setting. highly rec this vs staying in danang. Hoa is a sweetheart. surf boards for rent for cheap too.

Best place we stayed also!! - 16th March, 2006
It is correct that you won't get a response to reservation requests. I have recently stayed here and asked Mr Hoa because I had emailed and mailed him. The emails are received by his children in Danang and he doesn't respond. However, he said that he will always find a room for prospective guests.
My husand and I stayed for 6 nights and then returned for another night because it was so good. Unlike much of the country, this place is completely hassle-free and the most relaxing time of our 6 weeks in SE Asia.
Mr Hoa and his wife are the most gracious, generous and helpful people and everything they helped us organise worked out perfectly.

Best place we stayed In Vietnam - 4th March, 2006
Warning: if you venture to Hoa's place, you may never leave. At the very least, you'll end up staying a lot longer than planned. Hoa is a living legend, his place is friendliness personified and the beach is surreal in it's lack of commercialism and sunbathing bodies. If you go here, you will inevitably leave your positive remarks in hoa's guestbook. It's a given. 3c
