Hoa's Place

A budget institution on the beach

What we say: 4 stars

Sandwiched between Sandy Beach to the south and the Furama Resort to the North, Hoa's Place stands out as the single option for budget travellers wanting to stay on the sand. Thankfully, it's not a bad choice. Though the basic rooms are dingy, the mattresses hard, and the blankets a bit bare, this is overshadowed by the friendliness of Hoa, the owner. Fluent English-speaking Hoa (pronounced 'hwa') is a local institution. His small, family-run guesthouse is within steps of both the Marble Mountains and a practically deserted stretch of beach. While he only has a couple of rooms, Hoa serves as the manager for all the accommodation in the area (he and his wife are the only ones who speak English), and can easily arrange a room for you in one of the adjoining guesthouses. The rates are best described as variable and Hoa can cater to strict budget travellers if you don't mind sharing a room. Evening meals are communal, every night at 19:00 -- very popular and a great way to meet fellow travellers. Time and time again, Travelfish users have informed us that they showed up here planning to stay a few days and stayed a week. We've received a number of reports that booking requests to Hoa's by email tend to go unanswered, so you're probably best to just show up or telephone ahead.
