Unique but dreary

Guarded by a herd of concrete deer, this resort next to the giant Buddha offers rooms in a concrete longhouse and a basic bunker. Though the forested setting is rather atmospheric, the rooms are cell-like and damp, but there's little they can do about it -- the mountain is cloaked in mist for half the year. There is a karaoke bar on site, and while it looks forlorn during the day, we've heard that it can get pretty popular at night -- whether or not that improves the idea of spending a night here is debatable. There aren't many attractions around here, aside from a wine cellar that the French built into the side of the mountain -- you can take a look at it for 20,000. They host tour groups that supposedly do a tribal dance around a bonfire and drink traditional rice wine, but as far as we know, there aren't any actual tribal villages on the mountain. Consider bringing a book.
