Xuan Hung Hotel
Bad lobby, decent rooms

What we say:
It would be tempting to back away from the Xuan Hung after checking out the lobby, which is dark, cramped, and crowded with tacky 'antiques'. But if you're willing to give the place a chance, you'll find that the rooms are surprisingly comfortable. Take the lift up the skinny building to clean, airy rooms with huge windows, big beds, and bathrooms with full-sized bathtubs. Rooms at the front even have a balcony, though it isn't large enough to do much other than stand outside and look around.

Xuan Hung WATCH OUT
We arrived smiling and asking for a cheap room for a single night. The receptionist led us upstairs to a room for 350000 a night, which looked fine to me. Although it was obviously unoccupied, she mumbled something about someone staying in there, which confused me as to why she would show us in the first place. She then took us to the other end of the hall to show us the 'VIP' room, which, for an extra 50000, had a bath as the only difference. We agreed to take the room, particularly as the girl was very unclear with what she was saying, we almost felt she was trying to exploit us. Upon attempting to have a bath, we found the plug was broken and nowhere to be found. Luckily, we used a pair of scissors to unscrew the sink plug and fit it ourselves. The following morning, a Saturday, we were woken to hammering and power drills at 8am, coming from both beside and above our room. Since the hotel was particularly empty, I could not understand why she would place us in the room in which she did. We were always polite and accommodating, so the only conclusion I can come to is exploitation of naieve tourists in the low season. For a $20 a night room I have come to expect much more, and have recieved much better service from hotels with $10 rooms during our 3 month travels through SE Asia. Very disappointing. I would not recommend this hotel.
