Phuong Dong Hotel
Good value

What we say:
This mini-hotel is a cheap option a 10-minute walk from the centre of Hoi An, and attracts a steady trickle of budget travellers. Most rooms are small and sparsely furnished, with big beds almost filling them, but those at the front are much larger. Despite that we'd suggest going for a room at the rear of the building, where there is more peace and quiet and you'll get a view over the fields. Rooms are quite clean, with even the bedspreads smelling fresh — not always guaranteed — and there's free WiFi but no internet stations. Staff are friendly and helpful and speak excellent English. Compared with other budget hotels the rooms are some of the best value in town. Book ahead in high season as they're frequently full.

ok place, lacks organisation
I had made a reservation for the balcony room and I arrived very early in the morning. There was only one man there, who spoke almost no english, so it was pretty impossible to communicate. After a couple of hours a woman arrived and told me the room would be ready in a couple of more hours. At the end I had to wait a lot more and was put in a room with a window facing a wall and not the back balcony room as reserved and confirmed. They tried to charge the same price for a worst room, but after a bit of complaining they agreed to lower it to $11, which still felt expensive. The place is clean and new enough, has a nice bathroom and mini fridge, but they are not very organized. It is well located, not far from the old centre and there is a quite good restaurant just in front, with a super friendly lady and nice breakfast.

Great staff, clean rooms, pretty quiet
We came here after staying a night at Dai Long, which messed up our 3-night reservation, and kicked us out after a night. Dai Long, despite being a great place, was completely unhelpful about finding another option, and didn't even apologize for the miscommunication-mistake. In any case, we ended up at Phuong Dong and loved it. Super helpful staff with amazing recommendations for local eats not on any tourist map or book. The back rooms were much quieter than Dai Long, and the windows open for a great view and lots of fresh air, and a great view. Bathtub was a plus. For $12/night, this place really is a steal. Highly recommend it.

More like flashpackers
Ask for a room at the back, they overlook tranquil fields and beautiful sunsets. Negotiated the price down to US$9 for a room at the back on the third floor. Very friendly staff, clean rooms, good views at back, and a bathtub. We stayed for a week!

Best and cheapest
After looking for a hotel to stay at in Hoi An, I finally found this hotel which is almost in the middle of Hoi An. The staffs are nice and friendly. The hotel is clean and shiny. I paid $8 and stayed almost 2 weeks. Warmly recommended from me.

better than Dai Long?
Was not happy with the options supplied by the Open Tour to Hoi An, so I checked out both Dai Long and here. Dai Long offered me the windowless room directly behind reception for US$6. Whereas for the same price (negotiated down from $8) at Phuong Dong I got the nicest room I had in three weeks in Vietnam. I had a ground floor fan only room towards the back of the hotel (backing onto a field). Room had TV with cable, wooden furniture, comfy double bed, full-length mirror, bathroom with tub (bathroom was a bit grimy though), and a fridge. Hotel spoke adequate English, laundry was 15,000VND a kg, and there was even someone to let me out at 5am for a trip my My Son! Hotel is about a five minute walk from the riverfront/main drag, restaurants near the hotel also seem a bit cheaper than in "central" Hoi An. Surrounds are quiet at night, except for the nice background noise of cicadas chirping? Only quibble was I got two very old/stained towels and towels weren't changed or bins emptied in my five day stay.
