Hop Yen Hotel
Basic budget deal

What we say:
The Hop Yen's business card boasts that they're located in the old town centre but we're not sure which old town they're referring to, as they're a good 10-minute walk from Hoi An's centre. The hotel has loads of decently-sized rooms, including some with rather odd inward-facing balconies for smokers. This is one of the cheapest options in town, particularly as they also offer $5 a night dorm beds. Although the rooms we looked at were a little grubby it seems to be very popular; the first two times we tried to visit, they were completely full, without a single empty room to show us. If you're on a tight budget, it will probably do the trick, though you can do much better for a few dollars extra elsewhere. There is a second entrance at 694 Hai Ba Trung Street.

Good Stay
The dorm is what drew me to this place (it's a cheap option - $5). However, when I looked in and saw all the people sleeping at noon in the dark room that looked somewhat like a hospital ward, I opted to upgrade to a single fan room. The TV was broken, but the room was clean and had hot water. I didn't leave my key and the staff didn't ask me to, so that wasn't a problem. Overall a good experience and good value. It's a short walk from the shopping district.

Almost, But Spoiled at the End
I stayed here four nights. Arrived late in the afternoon on the first day, and they only had double rooms available. I was initially quoted $10, but they said if I switched to a dorm room for the second night, they would only charge me $9. The dorms, which I stayed in for three nights, were only $4. The rooms were moderately clean; quite moldy and could have used a good sweeping, but clean sheets. Sheets were changed daily. I paid each day, since I wanted to hold on to my passport. Didn't ask for a receipt, so what happened was partially my fault. When I checked out, they claimed I had not paid for one of the days. I stayed for 20 minutes trying to straighten it out, and locate the person I had paid, to no avail. I finally paid the extra $4 and left. It was too bad, because it was otherwise a good experience. I have rated the staff poorly based on this experience, if it had not occurred, I would definitely have rated much higher. One other thing - they make you leave your key at the front desk, and they leave all of the keys laying right out in the open. Several times I walked in, and no one was at the desk, so anyone could have grabbed any key and headed upstairs.

A good budget option
We stayed here for a couple of nights and found it to be quite good. Its nothing fancy, but $14 got us a room with aircon and hot water with two double beds. Most surprisingly, they even changed the sheets each day (other than that, cleaning was sporadic). The reception staff were helpful and cheerful. All in all pretty good (esp for $14).

Best of an expensive bunch
Stayed here for one night the weekend after new year. It was slim pickings at the budget end of the market at this time - think everyone was still here from the holidays and when the night buses descended there was a mad scramble for what few rooms were still available! The only room available was one at the front of the hotel. It was a good size for $18 and had a double and a single bed. It also had AC, fan, fridge and a small balcony overlooking the street. The room was very clean and well maintained and also had a lockable cupboard which we find useful since the norm is to hand your room key in when you go out. They offer breakfast (not included) and it's fairly cheap - less than $1.
