The Sunflower Hotel

Excellent value with best dorm rooms in town

What we say: 4 stars

The welcoming Sunflower Hotel’s sparkling white exterior perfectly matches both its accommodation and staff. Set slightly back from busy Cua Dai Street midway between the sandy shores of Cua Dai beach and Hoi An‘s old town, it’s a great place to lay your hat during your stay.

The ever popular Sunflower.

Walk through the reception and you are greeted by the large breakfast/dining room, which overlooks a very clean pool area lined with loungers. At reception you can book tours and transfers and they offer free local pick-ups and transport into town in a big air-con minibus — so if you are tempted by a giant marble Buddha statue you don’t have to struggle back with it in the basket of your push bike (bikes are 20,000 VND a day to hire from the hotel). The hotel’s WiFi has a good signal and they have computers down by reception, too.

Want to escape from the beach hawkers of Cua Dai beach?

The rooms are great, light-filled expanses that not only look as shiny as a new pin but have a freshly cleaned scent about them. You’ll find comfy mattresses and starched white bedlinen, plus a flat screen TV, fridge, wardrobe and desk — all that furniture doesn’t impose on your living space though. Bathrooms, although not the most flash I have seen, are immaculately clean and the water pressure in the showers is enough to blast away the cobwebs each morning, afternoon and evening — which you will need if your stay is during Hoi An’s long hot summer. Rates also include a good buffet-style breakfast.

Even the smaller $20 standard rooms, which are up in the eaves, have been designed to take in as much light as possible, with a long expanse of floor level windows so that you can lie in bed and enjoy the views. What struck me more than anything though was the noise — I mean, that there really wasn’t any. All rooms come with air-con.

An extra bed — perfect for when you fall out over the importance of shopping for just one more pair of shoes.

Rack rates top $20 for the standard, $24 for a superior and $29 for a deluxe –I have yet to find a more competitively priced hotel for the standards offered by the Sunflower, even when you add on the extra dollar a day you will spend on bike hire to zip around Hoi An.

Rooms that overlook the back of the hotel offer views of the pool, while front-facing rooms give you a great (but quiet) opportunity to play spot-the-most-overloaded-bike pass by.

Panoramic street views from your bed. Priceless.

The Sunflower’s 40 rooms tend to be booked out by savvy flashpacker pre-bookers and backpackers won’t be disappointed with the new dorm rooms which offer incredible value, clean and comfortable accommodation for less than $10 a night which includes breakfast; its peaceful atmosphere and genuinely friendly staff make it a real pleasure to come back to after a busy day sightseeing, so it’s no wonder they’re popular.

To match Sunflower’s prices you’d need to look along the backpacker-focused Ba Trieu Street nearer town, where you could consider the Thanh Binh 2 or the Dai Long Hotel, but you’d be sacrificing some exceptional facilities for the shorter walk into town. Sunflower’s new sister hotel, the Sunshine, is located just off Hai Ba Trung and has a matching high standard of accommodation and facilities, but still has a little way to go with its staff.
