Old school by the beach

Approaching Ha My TT Guesthouse from the road you’d be forgiven for mistaking this friendly little guesthouse for a Soviet-era bomb shelter. But if you continue down the red brick road to the entrance, you’ll be bowled over by the slightly shabby French colonial frontage, fringed by coconut trees, and an impressive art deco dining and bar area.
Ha My TT sits right on the beach between the Nam Hai and Le Belhamy resorts, flanked by a row of some of Hoi An’s best (and cheapest) locally run seafood places, with indirect access from the Da Nang coastal road by taking a non-existent right exit off a rather pointless roundabout. Facilities are best described as Robinson Crusoe-esque – there is no WiFi, tour desk or gym — just the restaurant/bar and a few shady tables and chairs set up on the beach, although if the wind is blowing in the right direction you can occasionally hook up to Hoi An’s free mega WiFi. The Viet Kieu owner speaks only French and Vietnamese.
The 10 air-con rooms are clean but basic with ensuite bathrooms with hot water showers and varying sized bath tubs and a fridge — some even have a 70s TV. No two rooms are the same and are priced according to numbers of beds. A double will set you back 300,000 VND a night including breakfast, a family room sleeping four or five 450,000 VND. If you plan staying awhile prices will be heavily discounted – if your French or Vietnamese is a bit rusty (or you are just rubbish at bartering) get the owner of neighbouring restaurant Ngoc Mai to help you out — she strikes a hard bargain!
There are very few accommodation options with direct beach access left in Hoi An — most of this land has been bagged by fancypants resorts with sky-high price tags, so to find something comparable in value you’d need to give up your beach frontage and check out Under the Coconut Tree homestay in An Bang Village, which has newer and prettier rooms and dorms from 140,000 VND a couple of hundred metres from the beach.
Ha My TT is a relaxed, old school backpacker hangout. It’s quiet practically year round (that bomb shelter outer appearance), but perfect if you just want to escape the travel treadmill for a few days of idyllic beach R&R and are happy with a basic room with comfy beds. And you can’t really go wrong at these prices.
