Description
We checked out the Binh Duong I, which is down towards the end of the alley, and were pretty pleased by what we found. They have a wide variety of rooms, from very cheap budget rooms on up to the low mid-range. We could find no fault with the rooms, which all seemed to be worth the price, depending on what you're looking for -- a small, windowless room with nothing but a bed is cheap, while a well-furnished room with a balcony, high ceilings, and two big beds is more expensive. And here's the piece de resistance -- many of the better rooms come not only with internet in the room, but also desktop computers to access it with. We were impressed. You also get free internet in the lobby if you get a room without a private PC. The cable TVs get a lot of the English language channels you may be looking for. Seems to be the place to stay.

Basic Room But Very Good for a Basic Room - ![]()

A lot of great things to say about this place. Very basic room, but maybe the best basic room I have ever seen in travelling Asia. Lots of hot water, a very few satellite channels on the TV and some decent decor. Staff, both day and night, were just super; friendly, engaging, offers of help, etc. Just great. The hotel advertises this place as 'Quiet'. What they really mean is that it is in an alley and not on a street. (This small alley is maybe backpacker HQ for Hue as many guest houses and the open tour buses stop out front.) In the morning the maid showed up EXACTLY at 6am: She starts throwing buckets, brooms and mops into the hallway; slams any open windows in the hallway, bangs the mop into the walls at every chance and then, the icing on the cake: she sets a radio up in the hallway to listen to music as she works. Besides the maid, woke up to dozens of serious, large bed-bug bites that looked as if I had chicken pox. Four weeks later the marks were still quite visible. Price noted in TF is $5. Even the lobby notes this price, but the staff were able to get away with charging others on my floor and on other floors (with the same room) $7 and $8 a night. At $5, and without the bed bugs and maid, it is a good place; for $7 or $8 it ceases to be a jewel.

Phong Nha
10/10 Nguyen Tri Phuong, Hue
Right across the alley from Cafe on Thu Wheels, the Phong Nha draws in a steady custom and is very popular with Japanese tourists. We can't say we were thrilled by the rooms we saw here -- they seemed a bit dank and airless. Also, badly lit. The over-eager staff were a bit of a turn-off, too -- we... more
Hung Vuong Inn

This homey place has a good, English speaking staff and a nice restaurant on the first floor that attracts a steady crowd and serves some tasty western dishes. The rooms are fine -- spacious and clean, with cable TVS, air-con and decent bathrooms. Not dirt cheap, but a good value for the price. It... more
