What we say:

The aptly named Amigo towers over a tightly packed alley of guesthouses slap bang in the centre of Hue's backpacker district.

Still spotless since its 2008 opening, Amigo offers a variety of rooms from the no-window edition to a spacious and bright upper floor room with verandas where you can catch the sun setting over the rooftops.

All rooms are simply decorated and equipped with air-con, exceptionally comfy memory foam mattress beds, TVs and well-designed en suite bathrooms with both a tub and decent pressured hot shower. Breakfast is also included in all rates. You'll need to be reasonably fit to stay in an upper floor room as there's no lift to speak of, but on the plus side they have a pair of scales handy at reception should you wish to see how much weight you lose running up and down the flights.

We'd fall short of calling them our "amigos", but staff are friendly and helpful enough and according to the hotel's marketing material you'll find a "host of recreational facilitiesâ€ in the lobby, which basically consists of a restaurant/breakfast area, computers and reception. For dinner, don't miss Les Jardins de la Carambole just around the corner.
