Amigo Hotel

Very friendly indeed

What we say: 3.5 stars

Towering over the heads of a tightly packed alley of guesthouses, the aptly named Amigo Hotel is slap bang in the centre of the bright lights of Hue’s backpacker district, just a phenomenally busy road away from the Perfume River and a 15-minute walk from the Imperial City walls. And just in case you need one, a top restaurant tip is Les Jardins de la Carambole just around the corner — which is still after 18 years the most popular place to eat stunningly good food in Hue (the backpacker district was built around it).

Amigo Hotel takes the Pavlov’s dogs approach to reminding you of its name.

Amigo has been generating quite a loyal following via word of mouth recommendations and rightfully so; built in 2008 it still sparkles like a shiny new pin and the friendly staff take a lot of pride in keeping it so, it even smells clean which is a huge relief after sitting on a train from Hoi An next to a vomiting toddler, which tends to happen if you take the cheap hard seat option.

The hotel lobby is where you find their “host of recreational facilities” which basically consists of a restaurant/breakfast area, computers and reception.

Rooms are plentiful and range from a $12 standard up to a $25 deluxe with balcony. All rooms come with air-con, memory foam mattress beds, TV and well-designed ensuite bathrooms with both a tub and decent pressured shower. Views from the rooms range from the old no-window rooms popular in Vietnamese cities to sweeping city panoramas from the fourth and fifth floors. Be warned that you need to be fit and organised to get up all those stairs, but on the plus side they have a pair of scales handy at reception should you wish to see how much weight you lose running up and down them every time you forget your sunnies/wallet/phone.

Those lovely mattresses!

With breakfast included in the price, room rates here are good value; throw in one of the best mattresses you are likely to sleep on at this price range in Vietnam and it’s great value!

If you are looking for something with a little more olde world charm nearby checkout Dong Loi Hotel on Pham Ngu Lao which has rooms featuring beautiful dark wood furniture and deco-style windows overlooking the city. If you are looking for a party, then Hue Backpackers of the Ha Noi Backpackers chain should be right up your street — and just down the street from Amigo. Both offer similar but totally different lodgings at similar prices.

A popular choice among flashpackers and weekenders Amigo’s friendly personality, relaxed atmosphere and central outlook make it a great choice, although families with young children might want to request lower floor rooms. We’d book it just for the beds – a good night’s sleep in a Vietnamese city is priceless!
