Lucky Star Hotel
Shines brightly enough
What we say:
We have a soft spot for Lucky Star and although it's looking a bit tired now compared to our last visit, it's still a good value option in the midrange. There are a variety of rooms on offer. Those at the front have balconies, but it's a noisy street so you may prefer a room at the back. Many of the rooms have attractive mosaic floors and exposed brick walls, which the romantics might feel give them a New York feel, and all are fully equipped, with safes and really big fridges, though the TVs are disappointingly old-fashioned. The beds are done up well too, with comfortable thick mattresses and fluffy pillows and most bathrooms have small bathtubs. There's no lift, and six floors, so if you don't mind a walk you might get a good deal on the rooms at the top.

lucky star - little diamond? look for someting else
Lucky Star is rather Little Diamond (but actually it is neither a star nor a diamond). After arriving at Hanoi airport (hotel arranged pick up service from airport to the hotel 15$ - next time I would try to avoid this by taking a shuttle bus) we spend three nights here. I was a bit disappointed, because the room turned out not to be comfortable or charming, I guess there are better options in Hanoi for the price. Positive: while we were waiting for the room to be prepared, we got a breakfast for free. The first thing that really turned me off were the dirty towels. Furthermore: we booked a horrible Halong Bay day trip at the hotel desk for 35$/person that included 'kayaking' (the whole trip was really like cattle drive and the kayaking was especially annoying). Don't do that. The departure was unpleasant: When we wanted to pay in Dong (because they wanted to have 3% extra for credit card payment) we had to give him 23000 Dong/$ (at that point in time 21000Dong/$ was the usual rate everywhere else). When I told the clerk that this is quite unsusal, he showed us some website with that exchange rate. Case closed. Next thing was the Taxi to the airport. We had agreed with the clerk on 250.000 Dong. He than told us, that it costs 350.000. Discussion... we gave him 300000. When we were in the taxi, I asked the driver what the hotel guy gave him. He got 150.000 Dong for the trip. Conclusion: The hotel staff pretends to be overwhelmingly friendly and to arrange worthwhile transportation for you. They don't.
