In 2009 this place went under new ownership and management. It was good before, and now it looks to be getting even better. Donald, an affable Englishman, is now running the place and making some enticing changes, adding more dormitories, remodelling interiors, setting up a book exchange, and hiring someone to turn the downstairs restaurant into a pub in the evenings, with a two-for-one happy hour. They're even going to replace the ugly exterior with a second floor veranda. It's already a great place to head for a clean, crisp dorm bed. They've expanded to several dozen beds in various rooms that accommodate 6 to 12, and there's a women-only dorm. Deluxe private rooms are beautiful and good value, some with city views. Travelfish users give this place consistently positive feedback, and that includes the tour services available in the lobby.

Great location but aging

We've been staying in one of the rooms on the fourth floor. Rooms are spacious indeed and clean but aging and we had a little rat friend which nibbled on my bag. It's still worth it to go to this place though I think, still good value especially because of the location. The reviews have brought a steady flow of people here but it's time for them to invest a little. For instance, I'd rather have a broken lamp fixed than two little soaps and two toothbrushes laying around in the bathroom.

Pleasant stay

We had clean rooms, triple sharing for just US$18 a night, albeit on the 4th floor of the hostel (they have no lifts). But they did provide great service and bookings to Halong Bay and Sapa, and even offered to store our backpacks for us while we were there. Helpful staff made the difference.
