Description
You'll find some of the cheapest rooms in Hanoi at the Thu Giang Guesthouse, and as long as you're prepared to get what you pay for, it's just what a lot of travellers we know are looking for. Rooms are all small and need a coat of paint, but are clean. The atmosphere at this long-running family joint is warm and friendly. Be sure to try for a front room as you may get a balcony that juts out over the laneway, which is a true Asian experience. The bathrooms are tiny and the cheapest rooms have an outside bath, though you won't have to share it with anyone. The family room sleeps six, but there's an additional per-person charge for more than three people. Excellent English is spoken, and they advertise that they don't employ touts to lead you to the hotel, though they will arrange pick-up if you call ahead. Apparently there are a number of unscrupulous sound-alike operations that do employ touts (and harass people in the name of Thu Giang), so double check the address if this is really where you want to head. A good place to meet some fair-dealing Vietnamese folks as well as other budget travellers.

Good location, fair and friendly -

I stayed three nights at Thu Giang in March of 2008 and found it quite comfortable. The rooms are clean and the hot water is hot! One note, do NOT go by the prices listed in Lonely Planet: they are a few years out of date! Prices in Hanoi have been going up rapidly and Thu Giang is no exception. Expect to pay around $12-$15/night. That said, the employees are all very kind and helpful. I spent time hanging out in the lobby and I NEVER saw them try to pressure anyone into booking tours with them. They will arrange taxis or motos for you and you can leave your bags there on the day of your departure. Ly goes out of her way to make your stay pleasant. My only criticism was that I made reservations with them and even had them arrange to pick me up at the airport. They knew it was a late arrival (10:30 pm) and my plane was about 30 minutes late. I finally arrived around midnight only to be told that they had no rooms. Their explanation was that 'they didn't think I was coming, since I was late!' To their credit they arranged for me to spend the night at another guesthouse a few minutes away for the same price, but it made for a less-than-ideal first impression. After talking with another traveler I found out that this sometimes happens. Once we got past that, I found them to be extremely helpful. Also the location is very convenient: less than 10-minutes' walk to Hoan Kiem lake and the night market. Also perhaps the best bunh cha joint in Hanoi is just around the corner. All in all, a pleasant place to stay.

Not good value -

For a budget place, this isn't such a bad pick. But we were annoyed because we reserved a double and when we showed up were told that the only available room was a $13 triple. For half the price, I would have been happy to stay here, but at $13 I would expect more.

Loved it! -

The people (Ly, Hien, Lian, Go Ha and da rest) are soo friendly! There's a white Persian cat and a 3three-month old chihuahua too! It's like one of the only places that has a family room. You can go to them for anything! They recommended a good agency for Halong Bay and Hoa Lu /Tam Coc. Rooms are decent.

Shabby and neglected -

Forget about this place! 1. People try to force you into booking tours and other stuff with them 2. Rooms are not value for money 3. It's loud, noisy and dirty.

A true treasure -

Staying with Ly and her mother was the highlight of our time in Hanoi. They took care of us like family. Along with arranging tours she even negotiated prices for taxis, food... They are so helpful to all. A great place for any and all questions. We heard it all while we were there!

Tung Trang Hotel
13 Tam Thuong St, Hoan Kiem District
The Tung Trang shows how spending an extra couple of dollars on a room in Hanoi can make a world of difference to the comfort of your stay. Rooms are spacious and absolutely spotless at this very friendly, family-run hideaway. There is a small courtyard at the front and the super-friendly staff... more

Hanoi Backpackers Hostel
48 Ngo Huyen, Hoan Kiem District
This excellent budget option is the only real hostel in Hanoi if not Vietnam, and for the single traveller who doesn't mind a dorm bed, this is outstanding value. Under Australian management, the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel has absolutely spotless dorms (both mixed and women-only) along with a... more

Real Darling Cafe Guesthouse
33 Hang Quat St, Hoan Kiem District
The Real Darling Cafe is a long-running, backpacker-orientated place with cheap and grotty dorms and better-conditioned single, double and triple rooms. It's popular for budget travellers, and if you don't intend to spend a lot of time in your room, it makes sense: the prices are among the cheapest... more

Manh Dung Guesthouse
2 Tam Thuong St, Hoan Kiem District
In a city where so many hotel staff are bored and burnt out, this place is a breath of fresh air. The guesthouse sits near the northern end of Tam Thuong alley, which offers a modicum of piece and quiet, and the sparkling lobby features new internet terminals and a lift, as well as low-pressure... more

Little Hanoi Hostel
48 Hang Ga St, Hoan Kiem District
We've never been great fans of the Little Hanoi Hostel, but the addition of a cheap six-bed dorm is starting to sway us. Set on noisy Hang Ga Street, Little Hanoi Hostel has barely adequate rooms both above the ground floor travel agency and at the rear of the guesthouse. If you choose to stay... more

Phu Hoa
16 Luong Van Can
The Phu Hoa is easy to miss -- a small sign marks its location down a narrow corridor between two other buildings to the entrance, somewhere in the centre of the city block. Yup, don't expect any great views, but we found a very friendly reception, and basic but cheap rooms with a fan-only option... more

Prince 57 Hotel
57 Hang Be Street
We received a very friendly, casual reception on our visit here. When we asked to see a room they tossed us the key and let us go up on our own, and when we forgot to shut the door after leaving, they made us go back and close it! But in a nice way. Really just the kind of folks you're looking for... more
