Description
The Real Darling Cafe is a long-running, backpacker-orientated place with cheap and grotty dorms and better-conditioned single, double and triple rooms. It's popular for budget travellers, and if you don't intend to spend a lot of time in your room, it makes sense: the prices are among the cheapest we could find in Hanoi, but remember, you get what you pay for. They've added a dorm on a lower floor since our last visit, and, strangely, the more expensive dorm is the one up top. The latter is a festy affair reached via a slippery and precarious staircase which we found after walking through a flooded foyer. And when we revisited for an update, guess what -- it was still flooded! It's adjacent to the shared shower facilities and is never dry. The singles and doubles are in better condition and have private bathrooms. The travel agency downstairs is popular.

I think ''you get what you pay for'' is a pretty apt statement about this place. The staff is friendly but the rooms could use some work. If you're on a really tight budget, I would recommend staying here.

On my stay in Vietnam I stayed on and off 7 or so nights in Real Darling GH and I kept going back. I stayed in a signle and a double with private bathroom which were very good (for the price) and at the dorm which could be better. But the great thing about this GH is the atmosphere. Great feeling and great place to meet travellers. The people working there are very helpful and the tours they do highly reccommended. Overall a great place to stay if you're looking for a cheap place and don't expect (any) luxuries.

This excellent budget option is the only real hostel in Hanoi if not Vietnam, and for the single traveller who doesn't mind a dorm bed, this is outstanding value. Under Australian management, the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel has absolutely spotless dorms (both mixed and women-only) along with a... more

You'll find some of the cheapest rooms in Hanoi at the Thu Giang Guesthouse, and as long as you're prepared to get what you pay for, it's just what a lot of travellers we know are looking for. Manh Dung Guesthouse
2 Tam Thuong St, Hoan Kiem District
In a city where so many hotel staff are bored and burnt out, this place is a breath of fresh air. The guesthouse sits near the northern end of Tam Thuong alley, which offers a modicum of piece and quiet, and the sparkling lobby features new internet terminals and a lift, as well as low-pressure... more
Little Hanoi Hostel
48 Hang Ga St, Hoan Kiem District
We've never been great fans of the Little Hanoi Hostel, but the addition of a cheap six-bed dorm is starting to sway us. Set on noisy Hang Ga Street, Little Hanoi Hostel has barely adequate rooms both above the ground floor travel agency and at the rear of the guesthouse. If you choose to stay... more
Phu Hoa
16 Luong Van Can
The Phu Hoa is easy to miss -- a small sign marks its location down a narrow corridor between two other buildings to the entrance, somewhere in the centre of the city block. Yup, don't expect any great views, but we found a very friendly reception, and basic but cheap rooms with a fan-only option... more
Prince 57 Hotel
57 Hang Be Street
We received a very friendly, casual reception on our visit here. When we asked to see a room they tossed us the key and let us go up on our own, and when we forgot to shut the door after leaving, they made us go back and close it! But in a nice way. Really just the kind of folks you're looking for... more
