Manh Dung Guest house

Cheap and homely

In a city where so many hotel staff are bored and burnt out, this place is a breath of fresh air. The guesthouse sits near the northern end of Tam Thuong alley, which offers a modicum of piece and quiet, and the sparkling lobby features new internet terminals and a lift, as well as low-pressure tour bookings and good travel advice. It's not quite the budget option is once was, and you'll sacrifice in terms of space in order to stay here: the foyer is small, the rooms smaller, and the bathrooms smaller still, but we reckon that's a small trade off to enjoy a pleasant, hassle-free stay in Hanoi. Add $1 a day for unlimited internet use in the lobby. Recommended, though some Travelfish users warn that their reservations have not been honoured.

Dont bother - 20th November, 2009
Moved here from Tang Trung across the street. Got a room at the very top of the building for $10. The old lady who owns the place is nice enough, but her workers will try to get every last penny out of you. We were charged a higher conversion rate for dong than everywhere else, and had to argue with them for about 30 minutes to get a fair exchange. The rooms are small, and the beds are not comfortable. Other options are much better.

Worst hotel I have ever stayed - 26th August, 2009
We arrived at this hotel at the midnight after browsing through our guide-driver at the airport, I don’t know how this hotel got in there, the room they gave us was dirty and when we asked the reception to give us a cleaner one they just laughed at us saying the room was clean (if You consider clean clearly used and not changed sheets with pubic hairs around, then this hotel is for You). We finally got another cleaner room at 2 am and they asked 60$, we were so tired that we accepted, however the next day we got a better, cleaner and more central hotel for 25$!

Overpriced - 5th April, 2009
We came to Manh Dung after calling beforehand, and we had a map from ReidOnTravel, which we followed to the last lane, so we landed at the right Manh Dung alright! But boy was I disappointed! We were given a $20 room, and it was the smallest room we had in all of the 3 weeks we spent in Vietnam! It was so cramped that if I had to walk my friend had to sit down! The room had all basic amenities...a fridge, two beds, small but adequate bathroom. But that's it. I could not understand why I was paying $20 for that - the road was a little bit too crowded for me, and although the Internet downstairs was free, having a cat land on your PC was a bit disconcerting to say the least! The people were friendly enough...although their enthusiasm in selling their tours put me off. We couldn't take the cat, and I felt too claustrophobic - we checked out the next day! Overpriced really...

Stay away - 9th April, 2008
Not to be trusted with reservations and therefore lacks credibility. The receptionist lacks responsibility and is rude and uncaring about other people's concerns. Upon arrival was shipped to the Kims Do as reservation not honoured. Stay away from both -- Kims Do is even worse!

Tell me sweet little lies! - 9th March, 2008
Confirmed double room through email, but at arrival not available. Had to move to TinTin Hotel(very poor -- avoid at any cost!) for one night. Another couple had the same thing happen. After just one night in a US$22 room we had enough and checked out, moved to Holidays Hotel(24 Hang Manh St) for a superb room -- very big and clean. At Manh Dung friendliness is a facade... Have a look in the rooms and compare them with others. They are tiny and not worth more than $10!
