The Tung Trang shows how spending an extra couple of dollars on a room in Hanoi can make a world of difference to the comfort of your stay. Rooms are spacious and absolutely spotless at this very friendly, family-run hideaway. There is a small courtyard at the front and the super-friendly staff will happily natter away with you. Rooms are at three price levels. The most expensive have verandas and rather pleasant views over the surrounding houses, the mid-range rooms are at the rear without veranda and the cheapest are in between with no views at all. Bathrooms, while small, are immaculate and overall the place is very well maintained. Welcoming and comfortable. Free WiFi is offered throughout the hotel. Recommended.

Quiet place and friendly staff - 20th December, 2007
If you want to find some peace and rest after a day of touring around crazy Hanoi, this is just the perfect place. Doubles to the back are US$15, twins $12. Breakfast in the family kitchen is a nice start to the day.

A very welcoming place to stay - 9th August, 2007
We had one of the rooms with a balcony at the front of the hotel, it was a very nice room at a good price. The hotel is family-run and everybody is very helpful in doing things such as arranging transfers and organising trips. The atmosphere is really mellow which is great after the hustle and bustle of the town.

Tranquil - 25th March, 2007
Stayed here three times while checking out northern Vietnam. Left my bags with no hassle, and my reservation was always honoured. In the chaos of Hanoi hotel scams, this place is a breath of fresh air. Nice family, with good English. Simple rooms (I stayed in the back) with comfortable beds, fan and air-con, hot water, TV and phone. Free internet, cheap beer and DVD players for rent. Good tour bookings with no hassles. But the best thing of all is the location, a five-minute walk from the western edge of the lake, down an alley that is silent at night and fills up with motorbikes and noodle stalls during the day and evening. Turning off the throbbing main street into the alley was always a welcome return.

A good deal - 1st December, 2006
I had a great time saying in the Tung Trang hotel. There's a nice pedestrian used street with great atmosphere. The staff took care of everything -- airport pick-up went flawlessly. Quiet good value rooms except for their cheapest rooms, which are a little too small for two people and their gear. IMO the mid- and top range rooms are excellent. Luomthang & the other people running this place make it a top spot in Hanoi to rest your head.(although the mattresses seemed a bit on the thin side -- but I am a heavy geezer...) A charming place !

Okay - 16th March, 2010
Stayed here for two nights. Dogs were barking all the time outside of the window. Bit annoying. The place was not easy to find, but it was in a nice quiet street. Staff friendly and grandma does the breakfast. Although it wasn't very good.
Nice place to stay, but i think there are better options in Hanoi. We paid $15 for a twin in low season.

Friendly staff and good location - 28th February, 2010
No problems when arranging pick-up, and staff was waiting for me when I arrived. The room I originally booked was not available, but they put me in a triple room for the same price.
Generally clean and extremely friendly staff. Would recommend it.
Only drawback is that some of the rooms are located up a flight of stairs, so if this is a problem you're well off specifying that you need a room on the second floor.

Friendly staff, homely atmosphere - 22nd January, 2010
Our budget limitations meant we were in the smallest room in Tung Trang, however, we were made very welcome by all the friendly staff and felt very at home.
After hearing lots of conflicting stories of who to book our Halong Bay trip with and stories of dodgy boats and 18-30 booze cruises, we booked the Imperial Junk through Tung Trang hotel and were very glad we did. Thank you Tung Trang! They made our 6 day trip to Hanoi a memorable one.

Varies from room to room - 9th January, 2010
Stayed here for 3 nights after booking online. Quoted $18 for a double room at the back. We arrived very early (night bus from Hue) so room not ready on arrival but offered a $15 room to use in the meantime which was OK but was in middle of building so it was very small and had a little window. Changed room later in the day ($22) - room 201. Nice double room with balcony although the winter temperatures don't allow you to take full advantage of this! Breakfast not included in the rates we paid. Currently in room 502 at the top of the building which is a family room, effectively 2 adjoining rooms with a double and two singles. Most rooms have AC, fan, TV, fridge and WiFi. The place is nice and quiet and the staff are helpful and accommodating. We looked at a lot of other places in Hanoi (all were more expensive and you didn't get as much for your money). Not a bad choice for a stay in the capital.

Everything TF wrote is true - 3rd January, 2010
Except for the spacious part, everything written is true. Absolutely nothing wrong with this great little hideaway. Slept well, Grandma cooked us a nice breakfast in the morning, and the 2 girls took care of both laundry and motorbikes. Nothing bad to say except bathroom size maybe, and awkward shower Taiwan style (no bathtub or space for it, right between toilet bowl and sink). Good spoken english. Add to the collection of currencies under the kitchen table glass if you can! (read: which one do they NOT have?)

Good option, little bit pricey - 20th November, 2009
This place is a quiet, friendly option that is a little more expensive than other options, but worth the price. The breakfast is acceptable, but not included in the discount price. We paid $16 for a double with aircon. The people running the hotel were hospitable and helped us with everything we needed.

Very Friendly and Recommended - 2nd November, 2009
After riding the minibus into Hanoi Old Town and being dropped off at a hotel which supposedly was Tung Trang, we realised it was not. After getting our map out and walking to the correct hotel - what a relief! This GH is down a very narrow street ans is family ran. We stayed on the 5th floor, AC, TV, Fridge, Balcony & private bathroom. Modern rooms and bathrooms - cleaned daily. The nicest touch is taking the offer of breakfast in the morning in the downstairs kitchen!
Recommended and very friendly!

Tung Trang II - 11th February, 2009
We had booked a room and an airport pick up online, but when we were taken to the hotel, it was not Tung Trang Hotel as we had booked, but the sister hotel - Tung Trang II, 45 Bat Sui Str. Hanoi. Not a very good start.
The room was enormous, 4 beds, little kitchenette and a nice seating area by the windows. Noisy street below, but earplugs helped.
The room was covered with MOULD. The walls had large patches of white mould growing on them, the wardrobe was totally unusable and the smell of mould was very strong. Our mistake was to accept the room, but it was late at night and we could not face the trouble of finding a new place. Next morning it was too late, as the staff was so nice, that we just didn't want to hurt their feelings. Lovely staff.
Good breakfast (not included in the price of the room), free fast internet, tour desk and lots of smiles and 'hellos' from the staff.
Next time, I'll find another place to stay.

Convenient and helpful - 6th January, 2009
The hotel arranged a 7-seater pickup for us (a couple) for USD20, and I find another couple to share the cost on the flight -- so it's USD10 each. The location is good and quite close to the lake. And the small lane there is always crowded with local people and deep fried food. I stayed in the Deluxe room with balcony. For USD20, I would say it's worth the money. The toilet is a bit small but that's not a big problem. And the staff are very helpful as well.

Such a great little hotel... - 2nd December, 2008
On the recommendation of Travelfish members, we stayed 2 nights at Tung Trang 1 Hotel in Hanoi and LOVED IT! We paid $13/nt for a smaller room but it was everything we needed. The room and bathroom were spotless (except for the cat that got stuck in our window) and the staff were always super friendly and helpful.
One piece of advice though: Don't book a Halong Bay Tour with the hotel. The company they use is not-so-good, we didn't get everything on the itinerary and the food was shocking. If we had our chance again we'd do Halong Bay independently. Take a bus to Halong town then organise your own way through the bay to Cat Ba Island, there is a great HI Hostel there. Stay a few days.
Hanoi is awesome, and if you go definitely try and get a room at Tung Trang 1.

Great location, value and very friendly, helpful staff - 1st November, 2008
Hard to imagine better value in Hanoi. Nice, quiet location. Basic, clean rooms with good a/c, hot water and cable tv. Amazingly helpful staff. Arranged a couple of really good tours. Our itinerary changed several times and the staff/family at Trung Trang handled every change perfectly. Not a 4 star hotel but a great value.

Super friendly - 22nd April, 2008
Hanoi can be a rather frenetic place and we loved returning to Tung Trang which was tucked away in a quiet alleyway. The staff were extremely friendly and were quick to store our luggage for us when we went up to Sapa and out to Halong Bay so that we could take small bags and then return back to the hotel in-between. They slightly muddled up our booking which meant that we ended up in one of their smallest rooms for one night out of five and it was REALLY small. The next size up type of room where we spent most of our time was perfectly fine and the big rooms looked very impressive. Great value, great staff and great location.

Warm, welcoming hotel - 29th February, 2008
We stayed here many times during our trip. We liked it so much we made it our hub. The staff is wonderfully helpful and friendly, and the rooms are clean and well lit, even though they have a little of that certain kitschy character endemic to Vietnam. If you're strong-legged and in love, I recommend the 5th floor room we dubbed the honeymoon suite. It's a tiny room with a balcony and a great view in three directions, which was full of flowers and heart-shaped balloons when we spent a night there.

There during Tet so probably charged more than usual because of holiday, as felt room should have been $15 not $20, no breakfast and no room cleaning but again, Tet. Otherwise, felt great, nice family and safe. I'd come back, unlike Prince Hotel (see my review there).

Overlook the rough edges - 18th October, 2007
It's true the location of this place is great and the family that runs it are really helpful and always smiling. There was free internet in the lobby, really handy. We had a room with a front balcony big enough for us to sit with a cold drink in the evening. It is a little grimy unfortunately, the towels threadbare and tiny and I really didn't feel anything was especially clean. But in the interests of enjoying your holiday you overlook some things. One thing we couldn't overlook was the noise from their renovations -- it could mean the place will be nicer in future, but it was sledgehammers from 7am to 7pm our entire stay. Overall I'd say this place would be okay without the renovations and if you don't mind roughing it a little.

Quiet location but overcharged - 14th June, 2007
We booked through the form on Travelfish and were charged US$14 for a room on the top floor at the back of the hotel. Although the room had a window we found it quite dismal. The walls were very grubby and the room itself was tiny but thankfully the beds and linen were clean. According to Travelfish a superior double should cost $15. (If this room was superior I'd hate to see the basic.) Despite all of this we did enjoy our stay. The family were really nice and even allowed us to use the kitchen on our last day to make sandwiches for our train journey to Sapa. Laundry we thought was expensive and one item came back with a stain that previously hadn't existed. The location of the hotel is great -- set down a quaint alley with lots of local life and within walking distance of the lake and streets of the Old Quarter. This was the most expensive room that we stayed in on our north to south trip and possibly the one that offered the least value for money. Needs refurbishing.

Underwhelming - 18th April, 2007
We got bumped from Thu Giang Guesthouse down the street and redirected to this place. It only had its cheapest room left, the one with no windows. It was small and damp -- they really need to invest in ventilation fans. I left with a pretty poor impression of this place, then I read here that the other rooms are much nicer. Doh! At least it was cheap, and the staff were quite friendly and helpful.

Nicest looking hotel in Old Quarter - 6th February, 2007
Stayed here as a first-time female travelling alone, and hotel provided no hassles. Decent-sized room, good price, cable TV, western toilet, hot water the first three nights (had one cold shower), cheap internet and laundry was US$1 a kg with 24-hour turnaround. The major drawcards of this place are how nice it looks -- not rundown and family is obviously very house-proud, in all my walking in the Old Quarter I didn't come upon a nicer looking budget hotel. Secondly, it's located a two-minute walk from the lake in a QUIET alleyway. There's also a Hapro mart nearby. Family does not try to push extra services on you and has good English.

Small but sufficient - 10th January, 2007
Staff very friendly, helpful and efficient. English good. Affordable although room bit small. Room clean but small and a window in the wall on the hall!? Bed was good and firm with decent pillows, towels okay. Nice and quiet. Bathroom small but clean, western flush toilet and hot shower, hot water doesn’t last too long though. Electrical outlets and a DVD player and TV. Bag storage available. Very cheap internet (100 dong/min) and 2 computers. Only do a $1 breakfast but there are 4 options and it's value for money. Many other restaurants in the area. There’s a mall at the bottom of Hoan Kiem lake with a supermarket that has basic grocery items much cheaper than the small vendors. Don’t know about laundry since we didn’t have to do any. No international payphones that we saw.

We e-mailed and confirmed this reservation three times because we saw that someone else had problems. We let them know that we would be arriving late at night, but when we got there, they had no room for us and argued that we did not confirm. Arrived late at night in Hanoi after a very long trip only to be disappointed. Sucked. The hotel next door was also booked but they were nice enough to find us a room elsewhere.

Helpful, friendly, family-run place - 30th November, 2006
A bit of a mix up with the taxi from the airport. Not their fault, but the taxi driver got a bit chewed out by the owner when we showed up for not being at the airport when we arrived. The hotel is small and beautifully run. The family takes great pride in their business. It's their home also and they like where they live to be a place for all of us to enjoy. The rooms are great and well cared for, the quiet alley that the hotel is located on is a blessing to come back to after the hustle and bustle of the Hanoi streets. You need the quiet to ease your brain after negotiating Hanoi all day.

Oasis of calm - 12th July, 2006
We've stayed here on 3 separate occasions. This hotel's position on a pedestrian / motorbike road is a huge bonus -- it is like you enter a calm spot the moment you turn down the lane it is located on. The service was excellent -- they helped us out with a very confusing situation regarding a visa we needed renewed. Also, the rooms were thoroughly cleaned every day we were here -- loved those giant(ish) towels! A nice family-run environment.
