Description
The Tung Trang shows how spending an extra couple of dollars on a room in Hanoi can make a world of difference to the comfort of your stay. Rooms are spacious and absolutely spotless at this very friendly, family-run hideaway. There is a small courtyard at the front and the super-friendly staff will happily natter away with you. Rooms are at three price levels. The most expensive have verandas and rather pleasant views over the surrounding houses, the mid-range rooms are at the rear without veranda and the cheapest are in between with no views at all. Bathrooms, while small, are immaculate and overall the place is very well maintained. Welcoming and comfortable. Free WiFi is offered throughout the hotel. Recommended.

Super friendly -

Hanoi can be a rather frenetic place and we loved returning to Tung Trang which was tucked away in a quiet alleyway. The staff were extremely friendly and were quick to store our luggage for us when we went up to Sapa and out to Halong Bay so that we could take small bags and then return back to the hotel in-between. They slightly muddled up our booking which meant that we ended up in one of their smallest rooms for one night out of five and it was REALLY small. The next size up type of room where we spent most of our time was perfectly fine and the big rooms looked very impressive. Great value, great staff and great location.

I have stayed here nearly seven days, everbody here is friendly and the rooms are great too. The staff here are not pushy at all and go out of their way to help you. I definitely recommend this place to people visiting Hanoi. They even helped me clean the dog muck off my shoes.

Warm welcoming hotel -

We stayed here many times during our trip, we liked it so much we made it our hub. The staff is wonderfully helpful and friendly, and the rooms are clean and well lit, even though they have a little of that certain kitchey character endemic to Vietnam. If your strong-legged and in love, I reccomend the 5th floor room we dubbed the honeymoon suite, it's a tiney room with a balconey and a great view in three directions, which was full of flowers and heart shaped baloons when we spent a night there.

There during Tet so probably charged more than usual because of holiday, as felt room should have been $15 not $20, no breakfast and no room cleaning but again, Tet. Otherwise, felt great, nice family and safe. I'd come back, unlike Prince Hotel (see my review there).

Quiet place and friendly staff -

If you want to find some peace and rest after a day of touring around crazy Hanoi, this is just the perfect place. Doubles to the back are US$15, twins $12. Breakfast in the family kitchen is a nice start to the day.

Overlook the rough edges -
By shinynewcoin ( total comments: 4  More information please ) Stayed here 10/2007
It's true the location of this place is great and the family that runs it are really helpful and always smiling. There was free internet in the lobby, really handy. We had a room with a front balcony big enough for us to sit with a cold drink in the evening. It is a little grimy unfortunately, the towels threadbare and tiny and I really didn't feel anything was especially clean. But in the interests of enjoying your holiday you overlook some things. One thing we couldn't overlook was the noise from their renovations -- it could mean the place will be nicer in future, but it was sledgehammers from 7am to 7pm our entire stay. Overall I'd say this place would be okay without the renovations and if you don't mind roughing it a little.

A very welcoming place to stay -

We had one of the rooms with a balcony at the front of the hotel, it was a very nice room at a good price. The hotel is family-run and everybody is very helpful in doing things such as arranging transfers and organising trips. The atmosphere is really mellow which is great after the hustle and bustle of the town.

Quiet location but overcharged -

We booked through the form on Travelfish and were charged US$14 for a room on the top floor at the back of the hotel. Although the room had a window we found it quite dismal. The walls were very grubby and the room itself was tiny but thankfully the beds and linen were clean. According to Travelfish a superior double should cost $15. (If this room was superior I'd hate to see the basic.) Despite all of this we did enjoy our stay. The family were really nice and even allowed us to use the kitchen on our last day to make sandwiches for our train journey to Sapa. Laundry we thought was expensive and one item came back with a stain that previously hadn't existed. The location of the hotel is great -- set down a quaint alley with lots of local life and within walking distance of the lake and streets of the Old Quarter. This was the most expensive room that we stayed in on our north to south trip and possibly the one that offered the least value for money. Needs refurbishing.

Great place -

Small, basic and clean rooms and bathrooms. Staff are very friendly, and the US$1 breakfast is as good as it gets for $1.

Underwhelming -
By LionelHutz ( total comments: 9  More information please ) Stayed here 1/2006
We got bumped from Thu Giang Guesthouse down the street and redirected to this place. It only had its cheapest room left, the one with no windows. It was small and damp -- they really need to invest in ventilation fans. I left with a pretty poor impression of this place, then I read here that the other rooms are much nicer. Doh! At least it was cheap, and the staff were quite friendly and helpful.

Tranquil -

Stayed here three times while checking out northern Vietnam. Left my bags with no hassle, and my reservation was always honoured. In the chaos of Hanoi hotel scams, this place is a breath of fresh air. Nice family, with good English. Simple rooms (I stayed in the back) with comfortable beds, fan and air-con, hot water, TV and phone. Free internet, cheap beer and DVD players for rent. Good tour bookings with no hassles. But the best thing of all is the location, a five-minute walk from the western edge of the lake, down an alley that is silent at night and fills up with motorbikes and noodle stalls during the day and evening. Turning off the throbbing main street into the alley was always a welcome return.

Nicest looking hotel in Old Quarter -
By meganpreece ( total comments: 3  More information please ) Stayed here 1/2007
Stayed here as a first-time female travelling alone, and hotel provided no hassles. Decent-sized room, good price, cable TV, western toilet, hot water the first three nights (had one cold shower), cheap internet and laundry was US$1 a kg with 24-hour turnaround. The major drawcards of this place are how nice it looks -- not rundown and family is obviously very house-proud, in all my walking in the Old Quarter I didn't come upon a nicer looking budget hotel. Secondly, it's located a two-minute walk from the lake in a QUIET alleyway. There's also a Hapro mart nearby. Family does not try to push extra services on you and has good English.

Small but sufficient -
By karelv ( total comments: 10  More information please ) Stayed here 12/2006
Staff very friendly, helpful and efficient. English good. Affordable although room bit small. Room clean but small and a window in the wall on the hall!? Bed was good and firm with decent pillows, towels okay. Nice and quiet. Bathroom small but clean, western flush toilet and hot shower, hot water doesn’t last too long though. Electrical outlets and a dvd player and tv. Bag storage available. Very cheap internet (100 Dong/min) and 2 computers. Only do a $1 breakfast but there are 4 options and value for money. Many other restaurants in the area. There’s a mall at the bottom of Hoan Kiem lake with a supermarket that has basic grocery items for much cheaper than the small vendors. Don’t know about laundry since we didn’t have to do any at that stage but sure they have. No international payphones that we saw.

did not save our reservation - No rating given
By snmmaclean ( total comments: 4  More information please ) Stayed here 12/2006
After e-mailing and confirming this reservation, 3 times, because we saw that someone else had this problem. We let them know that we would be arriving late at night, but when we got there, they had no room for us and argued that we did not confirm?? Arriving late at night in Hanoi after a very long trip only to be disappointed Sucked. The hotel next door was also booked but they were nice enough to find us a room elsewhere.

A good deal -
By rickjans ( total comments: 9  More information please ) Stayed here 11/2006
I had a great time saying in the Tung Trang hotel. There's a nice pedestrian used street with great atmosphere. The staff took care of everything -- airport pick-up went flawlessly. Quiet good value rooms except for their cheapest rooms, which are a little too small for two people and their gear. IMO the mid- and top range rooms are excellent. Luomthang & the other people running this place make it a top spot in Hanoi to rest your head.(although the mattresses seemed a bit on the thin side -- but I am a heavy geezer...) A charming place !

Helpful, friendly, family run place -
By EasyWorldTraveler ( total comments: 4  More information please ) Stayed here 11/2006
A bit of a mix up with the taxi from the airport. Not their fault, but the taxi driver got a bit chewed out by the owner when we showed up for not being at the airport when we arrived. The hotel is small and beauitfully run. The family that runs it takes great pride in their business. It's their home also and they like where they live to be a place for all of us to enjoy. The rooms are great and well cared for, the quiet alley that the hotel is located on is a blessing to come back to after the hustle and bustle of the Hanoi streets. You need the quiet to easy your brain after negotiating Hanoi all day.

Oasis of Calm -
By bat ( total comments: 2  More information please ) Stayed here 6/2006
We've stayed here on 3 separate occasions. This hotel's position on a pedestrian / motorbike road is a huge bonus - it is like you enter a calm spot the moment you turn down the lane it is located on. The service was excellent - they helped us out with a very confusing situation regarding a visa we needed renewed. Also, the rooms were thorougly cleaned every day we were here - loved those giant(ish) towels! A nice family-run environment!

You'll find some of the cheapest rooms in Hanoi at the Thu Giang Guesthouse, and as long as you're prepared to get what you pay for, it's just what a lot of travellers we know are looking for. The Real Darling Cafe is a long-running, backpacker-orientated place with cheap and grotty dorms and better-conditioned single, double and triple rooms. Manh Dung Guesthouse
2 Tam Thuong St, Hoan Kiem District
In a city where so many hotel staff are bored and burnt out, this place is a breath of fresh air. Little Hanoi Hostel
48 Hang Ga St, Hoan Kiem District
We've never been great fans of the Little Hanoi Hostel, but the addition of a cheap six-bed dorm is starting to sway us. Set on noisy Hang Ga Street, Little Hanoi Hostel has barely adequate rooms both above the ground floor travel agency and at the rear of the guesthouse. If you choose to stay... more

Phu Hoa
16 Luong Van Can
The Phu Hoa is easy to miss -- a small sign marks its location down a narrow corridor between two other buildings to the entrance, somewhere in the centre of the city block. Yup, don't expect any great views, but we found a very friendly reception, and basic but cheap rooms with a fan-only option... more

Prince 57 Hotel
57 Hang Be Street
We received a very friendly, casual reception on our visit here. When we asked to see a room they tossed us the key and let us go up on our own, and when we forgot to shut the door after leaving, they made us go back and close it! But in a nice way. Really just the kind of folks you're looking for... more
