Description
Under new ownership, the old Anh Dao Hotel has been renamed and remodelled. And the prices have doubled, of course! The cheapest rooms are a bit cramped and have no windows, though all the rooms now come with mini-bars and some even have Jacuzzis and desktop computers. The furniture motif is all heavy wood and faux pearl inlay, but it's all kinda pretty. The front rooms are very well-sized with small shared verandas overlooking Ma May St. The location is the main selling point here. The revamp has done it good, but the price jump has made the cheaper rooms less competitive, while the more expensive rooms now represent a decent mid-range option. The new Nam Hai has got some good feedback in terms of staff and room quality, though one common complaint is street noise bombarding the street-facing rooms. Bring earplugs or opt for a room at the back. Rooms include free breakfast and internet.

Apparently has changed ownership in 2007, no longer part of the camellia group: ''Dear guests,

Thank you so much for your interest in our Camellia hotel Group in the past years.

We would like to inform you that Anh Dao hotel- 37 Ma May Str. HN and Camellia 3 hotel- 31 Hang Dieu Str. HN will not be under our management from Feb 15th 2007.

We will not be responsible for everythings from the customers such as: complaints, criticisms about their services.

In order to meet the customers’ demand, we are now going to open the new 4 star hotel with an international standard in Hue City named Camellia hotel.

We are going to upgrade the service quality and working style for all the rest hotels: Camellia 2, Camellia 4 in Hanoi and Orchid hotel in Hue.

We hope to have a chance to greet and welcome all customers in all over the world to our hotels in the coming years.''

Nice place - just renovated -

We stayed there for the last night before going back home. After spending some nights in the Central Stars hotel at the beginning of our trip (where we were not satisfied with the cleanliness of the room) we were looking for a cleaer place, thats what we found here

IMPORTANT: The hotel has a new name: NAM HAI 1 Hotel.

It must just have been renovated since we had an absolutely new bathroom, great new a/c, TV, fridge.

Paid 20 USD for the night, good breakfast included. Staff friendly.

Noisy but friendly -

Agree with flowers23 that the front rooms are very noisy and now cost $25. However, since you should definitely have brought you earplugs with you to Vietnam this is not too much of a problem. Otherwise the staff are very friendly and the tour agency they use is ODC which was excellent. The rooms are huge, if slightly tatty, and the breakfast was okay. Recommended, mainly for the friendly staff and ODC tours.

Stay away from the front rooms. -

Took the advice to go for the front room with a balcony, well its great if you have earplugs and can sleep through incredible noise. Had one night in a front room with no sleep then we moved to the back rooms that were small but functional and quiet!!!!! Plus they were $15 a night a real bargain. Breakfast and internet included not a bad deal. Would not stay in the old quarter again if we were to visit Hanoi, too noisy.

Have you stayed at Nam Hai 1? What did you think?

Golden Lotus Hotel
32 Hang Trong St, Hoan Kiem District
The Golden Lotus has a dozen very smart rooms, making it a cut above the bunch for this price range in Hanoi. Set on fashionable Hang Trong Street, you're but a short walk from chic cafes, endless galleries and, of course, oodles of noodles. The rear rooms are very well-sized, while the front rooms... more

Classic Street Hotel Pho Co Hotel
41 Hang Be St, Hoan Kiem District
The streetfront rooms at the Classic Street Hotel (also known as Pho Co Hotel) are the cheapest of all the options, and they're pretty good value. Slate bathrooms are a refreshing change from ugly tiled affairs that feature in most Hanoi hotels and the rooms are well-sized and very clean across the... more

Prince II Hotel
42B Hang Giay St, Hoan Kiem District
The Prince II Hotel looks like just another mini-hotel from outside, but for the money, the upper-floor rooms are excellent value. Rooms come with complimentary WiFi broadband access, so travellers with laptops will really see the extra value in staying here and with desks looking out over the many... more

Sunshine Hotel
42 Ma May St, Hoan Kiem District
The six-storey Sunshine Hotel is a spacious enough affair with tiled floors throughout and ornate Chinese-looking furniture. The front rooms have small balconies, making the rooms a bit noisier, though bear in mind this is not the noisiest street in Hanoi, so it could be a lot worse. The rooms... more

Viet Fun Hotel
48 Ma May St, Hoan Kiem District
Viet Fun has a small selection of rooms and while it is popular, it certainly didn't strike us as being very fun. The cheaper rooms are bright compared to similar offerings in the area and the more stairs you're willing to climb, the more the price descends. We're a little suspicious about the... more

Salute Hotel
7 Hang Dau St, Hoan Kiem District
The Salute Hotel has undergone a remodel since we last visited -- good thing too, since they used to be a pastel-hued 'salute' to bad taste. Now they feature clean lines and muted tones with good attention to detail. This does not, however, justify the leap in the rates -- in some cases the rooms... more

Van Minh Hotel
88 Hang Bac St, Hoan Kiem District
As with most guesthouses and hotels in Hanoi the ground floor of the Van Minh plays host to the resident travel agency. The front rooms have balconies, along with the accompanying street racket, while the back rooms have no balcony (and in some cases no windows) but they are a good deal quieter.... more

Nam Hai 2 Hotel
40 Ma May St, Hoan Kiem District
The Nam Nai 2 has reasonable rooms -- very clean with half wood panelling and as much heavy wood furniture as they can cram in -- gotta love those pearl-inlay renderings of flying cranes and placid ponds. Hot water bathrooms are spotless and rooms also have fridge and TV, though the cable is... more

Prince 1 Hotel
51 Luong Ngoc Quyen St, Hoan Kiem District
There are many copies but this is the original Prince Hotel in Hanoi. It's in a cute little location at the crook in Luong Ngoc Quyen Street where it bends. The staff here have a reputation for being friendly and relaxed, and they don't seem to 'hard sell' their guests on tours. The better rooms... more

Hong Ngoc Hotel, Ma May St
99 Ma May St, Hoan Kiem District
One of the flasher offerings on Ma May St, the Hong Ngoc is a two-star hotel, low on charm, but high on cleanliness and functionality. It has very well-sized rooms both at the rear (without balcony) and out front (with a small balcony). The front rooms have splendidly awful art opposite the bed,... more

Hanoi Stars II Hotel
25 Hang Mam St, Hoan Kiem District
The interiors here were renovated in October 2007 to good effect -- they've spruced everything up so it's all clean lines, recessed ceilings with atmospheric lighting, and light-wood wainscotting. The bathrooms are nice tile affairs, though the renovation did nothing to cure one of our old pet... more

Lucky Star Hotel
11 Bat Dan St, Hoan Kiem District
The very clean rooms at Lucky Star are tiled throughout with some gaudy styles making a refreshing change from the chipped white ceramic fare you'll see in most hotels. All rooms are air-con with TVs, ADSL connections, and regulation heavy wooden furniture. Front rooms have small balconies with... more

Hong Ngoc Hotel, Hang Bac St
39 Hang Bac St, Hoan Kiem District
One of a growing number of Hong Ngoc Hotels in Hanoi, the Hang Bac property has adequate rooms which, like most of the branches, are somewhat overpriced. The front rooms have small balconies and big bathrooms and are surprisingly quiet, while the cheaper rooms are dark, windowless affairs --... more

Classic 1 Hotel
22A Ta Hien St, Hoan Kiem District
If you want a place stumbling distance from the bia hoi corner, the seven-floor Classic 1 is about your best bet, though that's probably the only reason to stay here. The Classic 1 has a mix of rooms, many of which are long and thin, sparsely decorated and few have much in the way of a view.... more
