This place used to be a rip-off outfit, but the building owner evicted the folks running the old 'Old Darling,' rebranded, and has set up his own place. Ocean Stars now has very a comfortable and well-designed interior, the rooms have been revamped with recessed ceilings, mood lighting and colourful bedding, and while the price has leapt up, it's definitely a change for the better. The new staff here seem quite friendly and eager to please, and have clearly adopted the 'soft sell' approach when it comes to booking tours, for which they should be rewarded with customers. Rooms are good value and the new regime is off to a promising start. Recommended.

By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. The rates you see above are what either the desk staff told us they were, or what were in the brochure when they just told us to quit bugging them and look in the brochure. Definitely gets mixed reviews - 1st May, 2008
For starters, the photo above is NOT the Ocean Stars II, which does not have balconies on the front - must be Ocean Stars, a related but different property. Also, I would never describe the ''interior'' of Ocean Stars II as ''very comfortable and well-designed''; it rather looks like a time-worn diner *** travel agency, complete with cracked-vinyl bench sofas and mural-sized adverts for their packages to Saba and Ha Long Bay. The famous ''Jimmy'' is indeed helpful, but his ''lobby boys'' can at times be sassy and pushy. Rooms vary considerably, so check yours out before you commit. Location is a plus; lack of cleanliness a minus; on the whole, you get what you pay for.

nose picking a problem :P - 28th March, 2008
I stayed here for a few nights, staff were extremely helpful with info on getting to Laos, Halong Bay trips etc, rooms were clean and comfortable, cable tv a plus... hygiene around food was questionable though as on a very high number of occasions several members of staff had fingers up their noses! But apart from that the place was great! Free internet a bonus aswell!
