Hanoi Phoenix II
Under new management ... again

What we say:
The phoenix supposedly rises, reborn, from its own ashes, and never was there a more fitting name. We've always thought that this was a decent hotel: small, but good value and in a great location on a quiet sidestreet in the heart of the Old Quarter. Currently, there's a comfy lobby/seating area with free tea and coffee, and clean, smart rooms that are now newly remodelled with great attention to detail, making them even better, with no great leap in price. So this could be a fine place. The only problem is, we've been reviewing this hotel for years and it changes hands — and names — with the seasons. Past incarnations have typically been rip-off joints. The new owner struck us as earnest. They renamed the hotel to give it a fresh start. We say, give it another day in court. Note: this place is not on Dao Duy Tu proper but on a lane of the same name, one block north of Luong Ngoc Quyen, connecting Dao Duy Tu and Ta Hien.

Has completely disappeared!
Well! What can I say. This has apparently rebranded as the Phoenix II which we were notified as we booked via the Venere website and so all good, we turned up in a taxi. Except no 10 Dao Duy Tu Lane was a completely boarded up shop and entrance way that looked nothing like the picture above! Just a warning!

Definitely gets mixed reviews
For starters, the photo above is NOT the Ocean Stars II, which does not have balconies on the front - must be Ocean Stars, a related but different property. Also, I would never describe the ''interior'' of Ocean Stars II as ''very comfortable and well-designed''; it rather looks like a time-worn diner *** travel agency, complete with cracked-vinyl bench sofas and mural-sized adverts for their packages to Saba and Ha Long Bay. The famous ''Jimmy'' is indeed helpful, but his ''lobby boys'' can at times be sassy and pushy. Rooms vary considerably, so check yours out before you commit. Location is a plus; lack of cleanliness a minus; on the whole, you get what you pay for.

nose picking a problem :P
I stayed here for a few nights, staff were extremely helpful with info on getting to Laos, Halong Bay trips etc, rooms were clean and comfortable, cable tv a plus... hygiene around food was questionable though as on a very high number of occasions several members of staff had fingers up their noses! But apart from that the place was great! Free internet a bonus aswell!
