Description
We're a little suspicious of Hanoi Hotels with multiple names -- often they're trying to dodge a bad rep they earned under one name, but they're too cheap to change their old signs. Hanoi Hostel (also known as Red River I Hotel), is set on busy Thuoc Bac St, and on our first visit here we struggled to see a room without first agreeing to take a tour, so that sort of set the tone. On our revisit they let us see a room without hassling us, but we asked the receptionist if guests must book a tour to stay here, and she unapologetically admitted that, indeed, they should. We've heard no specific complaints about this place, but other such places tend to treat guests like dirt the second they realise they aren't going to make tour-money from them. Rooms are adequate, well-sized, with high ceilings, good furnishings, and clean bathrooms, though go for a rear room as there is considerable traffic noise around here. Free WiFi is available.

Artist Hotel
22A Hai Ba Trung St, Hoan Kiem District
The Artist Hotel is an interesting find for those who want to strike out off the tourist track and hang out with, well, artists. The hotel is managed by the Ha Noi Centre for Tourism and Culture (that is, the government) and has decent rooms set around a central courtyard area. We've seen better... more

Prince 79 Hotel
79 Hang Bac St, Hoan Kiem District
The front rooms at the six-storey Prince 79 Hotel have balconies and accordingly catch a bit of street racket, but for an almost-budget room, you could do worse. Rooms are semi-clean, if you don't mind the odd cobweb, and the bathrooms are moderately-sized, though the cheapest rooms do not have... more

Old Darling II and Asia Queen Hotel
16 A-B Trung Yen Lane, Dien Liet St, Hoan Kiem District
This place used to be the most wretched of the 'Darling Backpacker' rip-off outfits -- some users complained of being kicked out of a room simply because someone else showed up willing to pay more! That's rough, even by Hanoi standards. But the offending owners are now gone, and the the Old Darling... more

Tien Thuy Hotel
9 Hang Thung St, Hoan Kiem District
The Tien Thuy is a little bit of a stroll from the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, but for some travellers that's probably just what the doctor ordered. Friendly, English-speaking staff will show you room after room after room, and while there are just the three price grades, no two rooms seem quite... more

Youth Hotel
33 Luong Van Can St, Hoan Kiem District
Based on the name, you might suspect that this is a hostel for backpackers, and it sort of is -- the dorm offers four cheap sleeps for the budget crowd, but the rooms are priced for backpackers with good jobs. The kitschy log-cabin design of the interior is actually kind of fun, and the reception... more

Bamboo Central Stars Hotel
So 8 Dao Duy Tu Lane, Hoan Kiem District
Take note that this place is actually located on a lane that branches to the west of Dao Duy Tu Street, not on the street proper. We've got a lot of intelligence about the Central Stars (we're not sure how the word Bamboo popped up in the name, but there it is) and it seems to boil down to this:... more

A Dong Hotel
46 Luong Noc Quyen St, Hoan Kiem District
Formerly the Van Xuan II Hotel, the A Dong has changed ownership and got its act together. It's no wonder they got rid of the old name -- there were some horror stories circulating about the place. They used to have some cheap rooms, but after being remodelled, they're just outside budget range.... more

Ocean Stars II
So 10 Dao Duy Tu Lane, Hoan Kiem District
This place used to be a rip-off outfit, but the building owner evicted the folks running the old 'Old Darling,' rebranded, and has set up his own place. Ocean Stars now has very a comfortable and well-designed interior, the rooms have been revamped with recessed ceilings, mood lighting and... more

Rose Hotel
56 Ngo Huyen Street
The area around the cathedral is a great place to stay -- quiet, pretty, and a lot of interesting restaurants and cafes to check out right near by. So we tried to find some good-value budget accommodation -- unfortunately it seems to be something of a 'flashpacker only' neighbourhood. This place is... more
