Description
Take note that this place is actually located on a lane that branches to the west of Dao Duy Tu Street, not on the street proper. We've got a lot of intelligence about the Central Stars (we're not sure how the word Bamboo popped up in the name, but there it is) and it seems to boil down to this: the rooms are good and worth the price -- well-sized with comfortable bedding and reasonably clean bathrooms. The triples and family rooms are a particularly good deal, and bargaining may get you a discount. The staff are friendly and helpful. But (and this is a big but) if you don't book a tour with them, things can slide downhill fast. There have been repeated complaints of the staff becoming volatile if you look for a budget tour elsewhere.

We booked our first nights in the bamboo hotel in hanoi, however we ended up in the central stars hotel. as travellers might know from their arrival in vietnam we were overwhelmed by the first impressions, so we did not even figure out that we were at the wrong place in the beginning and nobody from staff lost a word about it.
great plus for the free airport pickup (usually taxi transport is about 10 USD)
but after having seen other hotels we have to say, that many other had much more to offer. bathroom was not clean at all, loud room with noise from stairway and street. breakfast is very basic...
staff was friendly but was selling tours much too expensive and was a little pushy. we were right after arrival uninformed - they wanted to sell us their stuff right away. we would cut at least about a third of the price next time and would bargain high :-)
paid USD 14 for room with a/c, tv, mini bar - internet free. fair stay, but better value definitely available!!
Good but shop around for tours or diy! - ![]()

Staff friendly, helpful and very efficient, excellent English. $15 room good but $10 better value for money. $15 room is a little bit bigger, with a bath in the bathroom which is useless since the water pressure isn’t that strong so the hot water runs out before the bath is even a quarter full, plus a balcony that looks out onto another ugly dirty building and a narrow alley down below. Room(s) spotless and very spacious, wooden flooring a nice touch. Bed was good and firm with decent pillows, towels good. Pretty quiet except for karaoke we had to endure for some time in the $10 room.Bathroom clean with flush western toilet and hot shower, hot water doesn’t last too long though. Electrical outlet. Don’t know about bag storage but sure they have. Free internet available in lobby and 4 computers. A place to have free breakfast that is included as part of your stay (baguette, jam, banana and coffee/tea) is across the narrow alley by the entrance. Numerous restaurants in the area ranging from cheap to affordable to ridiculous. Laundry service is available. No international payphones that we saw but there are places that provide international call services.Travel advice provided by staff is good and helpful but do your own research too to determine when they’re helping you and when they’re helping themselves.

Artist Hotel
22A Hai Ba Trung St, Hoan Kiem District
The Artist Hotel is an interesting find for those who want to strike out off the tourist track and hang out with, well, artists. The hotel is managed by the Ha Noi Centre for Tourism and Culture (that is, the government) and has decent rooms set around a central courtyard area. We've seen better... more
Prince 79 Hotel
79 Hang Bac St, Hoan Kiem District
The front rooms at the six-storey Prince 79 Hotel have balconies and accordingly catch a bit of street racket, but for an almost-budget room, you could do worse. Rooms are semi-clean, if you don't mind the odd cobweb, and the bathrooms are moderately-sized, though the cheapest rooms do not have... more
Old Darling II and Asia Queen Hotel
16 A-B Trung Yen Lane, Dien Liet St, Hoan Kiem District
This place used to be the most wretched of the 'Darling Backpacker' rip-off outfits -- some users complained of being kicked out of a room simply because someone else showed up willing to pay more! That's rough, even by Hanoi standards. But the offending owners are now gone, and the the Old Darling... more
Tien Thuy Hotel
9 Hang Thung St, Hoan Kiem District
The Tien Thuy is a little bit of a stroll from the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, but for some travellers that's probably just what the doctor ordered. Friendly, English-speaking staff will show you room after room after room, and while there are just the three price grades, no two rooms seem quite... more
Youth Hotel
33 Luong Van Can St, Hoan Kiem District
Based on the name, you might suspect that this is a hostel for backpackers, and it sort of is -- the dorm offers four cheap sleeps for the budget crowd, but the rooms are priced for backpackers with good jobs. The kitschy log-cabin design of the interior is actually kind of fun, and the reception... more
A Dong Hotel
46 Luong Noc Quyen St, Hoan Kiem District
Formerly the Van Xuan II Hotel, the A Dong has changed ownership and got its act together. It's no wonder they got rid of the old name -- there were some horror stories circulating about the place. They used to have some cheap rooms, but after being remodelled, they're just outside budget range.... more
Ocean Stars II
So 10 Dao Duy Tu Lane, Hoan Kiem District
This place used to be a rip-off outfit, but the building owner evicted the folks running the old 'Old Darling,' rebranded, and has set up his own place. Ocean Stars now has very a comfortable and well-designed interior, the rooms have been revamped with recessed ceilings, mood lighting and... more
Hanoi Hostel
85 Thuoc Bac St, Hoan Kiem District
We're a little suspicious of Hanoi Hotels with multiple names -- often they're trying to dodge a bad rep they earned under one name, but they're too cheap to change their old signs. Hanoi Hostel (also known as Red River I Hotel), is set on busy Thuoc Bac St, and on our first visit here we struggled... more
Rose Hotel
56 Ngo Huyen Street
The area around the cathedral is a great place to stay -- quiet, pretty, and a lot of interesting restaurants and cafes to check out right near by. So we tried to find some good-value budget accommodation -- unfortunately it seems to be something of a 'flashpacker only' neighbourhood. This place is... more
