Prince 57 Hotel
A top budget pick

What we say:
Recent mixed feedback on this place has us scratching our heads. On our visit, we received a very friendly, casual reception. When we asked to see a room they tossed us the key and let us go up on our own, and when we forgot to shut the door after leaving, they made us go back and close it, though in a nice way. They struck us as just the kind of folks you're looking for in what is one of Hanoi's true budget operations. Who needs to be pampered when you're paying prices this cheap? And the room we saw was very nice for the price: small, but with a big window, TV, comfy bed and decent bath. The source of our perplexity is that one user says they stayed here for six months and never encountered any problem, while another says they were harassed and assaulted. Our bet is this place should be characterised by the former rather than the latter. Otherwise, a top pick on the no-frills, budget score, and with 45 rooms, they're likely to have a vacancy even when the rest of the Old Quarter is filling up.

Rats and moldy walls...
We paid $8 for a double room with fan, hot water, cable TV, and clean sheets. The room is not very clean though. It's definitely the kind of place in which you want to keep your sandals on at all times. The walls are covered in mold and the paint is chipping away. The room is stuffy and smells of mildew. The water is yellowish and tastes metallic. Best of all, we had an extra guest in our room--a nice big rat! We saw him scurry under the bed. He got into our cashews a little. We hung our bags up for the night so he wouldn't do any more damage. We left in the morning for a $10 room at a much cleaner place in an alley of hotels near the Tung Trang. We couldn't recommend this place to anyone, but hey, it's cheap! $2 more per night gets you a much better place though. Keep looking. There are way more hotels in Hanoi than are listed here on Travelfish.

Hanoi Mafia
Bad place. Hanoi Mafia. Me and my wife had a very bad experience at this hotel. One of the places that pick you up from the bus station, tell you that they pay the taxi, but if the water is brown and I and my wife decide not to take the room they use physical violence against me and my wife. First they pull my wife back from behind on her backpack telling her to pay the taxi. And then if I push the guy telling him not to treat my wife like that he hits me in the face with his hand and tries to kick me in the balls. I could avoid the kick, but then there are 3 Vietnames men around us so we paid for the taxi and disappeared. So, my conclusion, do not go to prince 55-57 hotel. Zero stars as rating, but the minimum on this site is 1. They certainly do not know how to take their loss if you do not take the room.
