We couldn't help but laugh when we saw the homepage for the website of Canh Dieu Hotel and the photo of the girl staring out to sea from her private infinity pool.
Ninh Binh isn't near the ocean and the hotel certainly doesn't have infinity pools, but it is well-decked out compared to many hotels we've seen in the same price bracket, although mattresses are on the hard side. Standard single rooms start at US$13 but we'd go for the Superior Mountain View for extra space and a balcony. Rooms are carpeted, which may be questionable from a cleanliness point of view but is certainly cosier for those Ninh Binh winters, although dual air-con is also installed. It's located on the street that runs parallel to the train line, on the other side of the tracks to the train station, so may get some noise -- despite the claim of double-glazed windows. This is quite a dark part of town, with little nearby activity, but if all you need is a base from which to explore the surrounding countryside, the location's not a deal breaker. A good breakfast is included and the hotel serves other meals as well, plus we spotted some eating places nearby.
