Phong Lan Hotel
What we say:
This place is one of the chosen sweeties of a very popular guide book, and it remains a reasonable choice, if only because the owner, Tung, speaks English quite well, and can be very helpful in sorting out tours, and activities while you're on the island. However, we felt he was resting on his laurels a bit when it came to some minor house-keeping matters. Nothing too serious it's just that -- well...stained linens, even when clean, are always a little disconcerting. And, to be honest, some of the rooms smelled mouldy. But Tung's a savvy guy, and he's probably going to read this, so maybe he'll do something about it by the time you visit.

Nice enough, if you don't mind being unceremoniously turfed out!
The hotel certainly offers nice views and a good work out if, like us, you were told the only room available was on the 6th floor. The rooms are spacious and well ventilated although Mr.Tung will quite sneakily offer you the remote control for the air con unit WIHTOUT letting you know its an extra cost. We were happy to stay here until we were telephoned and asked to check out (half an hour before check out time!) Apparently they assume you only stay one night rather than the more sensible assumption that you are here to stay until you let them know 24 horus before check out! We were told the hotel was overbooked and Mr.Tung had promised the room to a group without letting us know. (Allthis was done through a mediator, apparently the manager doesn't do his own dirty work.) We were then told if we wanted to stay in the roomw e would have to fork out double the agreed rate. After much to and throwing we finally got a clal back after 20 minutes agreeing to let us stay for the same free but ''only today, you have to be out tomorrow.'' This didn't reallly affect us since we were leaving the next day anyway but we didn't find it courteous to his guests that Mr.Tung (good english aside) dictates how long his guests are permitted to stay. Basically, be savvy enough to make sure you know what you're paying for and make it clear how long you wish to stay for.
