Description
You can tell from the exterior that the Princes Hotel is a touch of class among the common rabble. The interior delivers on the promise, with a nice lobby, and the rooms arranged around an interior atrium several stories high, with sky-lights at the top (and a net rigged on the bottom to catch people if they fall over the balustrade!) It's not on the water so the balcony rooms only over look the street, but it's a pleasant view anyway. The interiors are quite a step up from the two star hotels in the neighbourhood in terms of style and taste, and the staff speaks English well -- we found them cheerful and helpful on our visit. Also, there are elevators to cart you up and down all those floors, so not to worry. If you're used to travelling in luxury, you won't find much of it on Cat Ba Island, but you could do a lot worse than to slum it here. Prices include taxes and surcharges, and also breakfast.

This place is usually hopping with Vietnamese tourists, even in low season. Maybe that's why we found the staff a bit distracted. It didn't help that the lobby is one, big, massive echo chamber and there were twenty people inside it all talking at once. When we saw the rooms, we couldn't quite... more
