Princes Hotel
A touch of class among the rabble

What we say:
You can tell from the exterior that the Princes Hotel is a touch of class among the common rabble. The interior delivers on the promise, with a nice lobby, and the rooms arranged around an interior atrium several stories high, with sky-lights at the top (and a net rigged on the bottom to catch people if they fall over the balustrade!) It's not on the water so the balcony rooms only over look the street, but it's a pleasant view anyway. The interiors are quite a step up from the two star hotels in the neighbourhood in terms of style and taste, and the staff speaks English well -- we found them cheerful and helpful on our visit. Also, there are elevators to cart you up and down all those floors, so not to worry. If you're used to travelling in luxury, you won't find much of it on Cat Ba Island, but you could do a lot worse than to slum it here. Prices include taxes and surcharges, and also breakfast.

A touch of ripoff amongst the value
Where to begin? This is not a western friendly hotel, I understand this is Vietnam but it is not a friendly place. The beds have lots of springs, I know this because I could feel all of them. The breakfast is included but bad. insects included free and eggs only sometimes available. If you like coloured sugar water rather than juice, this is your kinda place. They had no record of an expedia booking (an online booking agency) so I had to request a refund from expedia and instead pay them directly. a nightmare to try and rectify and They made us late for our Halong cruise by refusing to return our passports even once we had paid. Rooftop bar is great although one night the stubborn staff played the SAME techno song at full volume on repeat while we were enjoying a sunset drink. when requested to change it up, they refused and said they enjoyed it...so that's that. The hotel echoes like a cave so when a tour group awakes early in the morning and begin shouting to each other, it's time to wake up! You can't see the ocean, we moved to a ocean view room down the road for $10 per night (a quarter of the price). The sauna/jacuzzi was a construction site. The bar up top is a great view though...head there for a drink and watch the magical cat ba town with a sunset backdrop.
