Van Nam Hotel
Congenial staff

What we say:
There isn't much to distinguish the Van Nam from it's neighbours, but it's one place that tends to do well even in the off season. The staff are very congenial, though little English is spoken. As good a place as any, maybe a tad better for the price.

Big clean room
We stayed at the Van Nam for just 1 night before heading off on a boat tour of Halong Bay. There are lots of hotels on this street - we looked at three in all and the Van Nam was the best - the one listed in Lonely Planet was awful!! There was some building work going on in the hotel next door but fortunately it didn't bother us too much (we came across building work all over vietnam). Our room was at the front on the main road, it had a balcony (handy for drying laundry). The room was massive (2 double beds), very clean and appeared to have recently been re-decorated. Air con and a fridge were included in the $8 room rate. The staff were very nice - didn't speak too much English but it didn't cause too much of a problem. No internet on site but a massive internet place across the road in the Post Office building. The nearby restaurant owners were a bit of a nuisance, we were chased down the street by them waving menu's at us a few times - they don't like NO!! Good clean hotel
