What we say:

The Royal Hotel is a work-in-progress. The rooms currently available are housed in an eclectic array of buildings, most of which seem to be a modern take on the French colonial style. Each building houses about a dozen rooms -- decent, but overpriced. We weren't too keen on the layout, which has all the disadvantages of a sprawling summer resort, with few of the advantages that usually pertain thereto. True, the pool over-looking the bay is quite good, especially for Ha Long. But the real raison d'etre of the place is the 'Gaming Club,' that is, casino, which is bound to see a lot of tourists parting with their cash in increasing numbers -- apparently it's part of a joint venture with some Taiwanese investors. A large, five-star hotel is currently under-construction adjacent to the casino, as an addition to the whole Royal Hotel mega-plex under construction.Prices do not include 15% taxes and surcharges. Children under 8, no additional charge.
