Green World Hotel
The biggest in town

What we say:
An enormous green hotel which sits at the back of Tam Dao. The management actually owns the hotel next door as well making this truly the biggest hotel in the town. It has enough storeys to justify the two elevators which take you up to rooms which, considering the hotel is only three months old, shouldn't have cigarette burns in the mattress or damp stains on the walls. At any rate there is heating, satellite TV, baths in most rooms and internet in the lobby. There is also a restaurant and bar. In the adjoining hotel they have table tennis and billiards. Choose from about 100 rooms and the elevation gives you a good view out over the town.

Reasonable mid-priced option
This was a bit above our price range at 550,000 ($28) for a double room but having looked at a couple of the (rather grotty) cheaper options on offer we couldn't be bothered to search any further and checked-in. The room was spacious and had the expected fridge, cable TV and kettle along with a (very short!) bath and a small balcony with good views across the town and valley. It was clean enough but had a bit of a damp feel to it and the bedding didn't smell as fresh as I'd expect from a mid-range hotel. They also seemed a bit ill equipped for guest food and beverage requirements: returning to the hotel at 8pm, due to terrible weather not really inspiring us to wander around the beer joints in town, we were frustrated to find the cable had been knocked out so we tried to procure some wine or beer to pass the empty hours with little joy. Although they were able to sell me a catering sized pack of custard sponge cakes! That said, if I go back to Tam Dao I'd certainly consider staying there again as the other options didn't look too inspiring. A noodle breakfast was included in the price.
