Description
As with the Huy Hoang next door, Hotel 31 (so-named due to its street address) is a popular stop with the Saigon tour-group mob scene, with its two-level restaurant filling up to bursting with tourists at lunch time. These temporary crowds aside, this is a very good value hotel with the streetside rooms big enough to play volleyball in and reasonably clean (though they could learn to sweep under the bed once a decade). Streetside rooms also have a small veranda. With rooms this large, it is hardly worth going for air-con as the room never really cools down, but fan with the veranda doors open should be adequate. As with the Huy Hong, the staff here are quite jaded.

They offer Scam Tours - ![]()

DON'T ask in the hotel for any boat tours! They offer scam tours organised by Mr.Triet Quang Huynh (Phone: 0913 - 618056, triet-quang@hotmail.com, also working together with Ms. Phuong and Mr. Sang).
First of all this tours are much too expensive. He try to charge 40,- $ per person for a six hour boat trip. You could get the same trip for half and share with some other travelers, so the whole trip may be is 4,- - 5,- $ / person.
If you book a tour by Mr. Triet, he will organize a 'guide' what means during the boat trip an another tour tout will accompany you all the way and will harass you for hours to sell you other scam tours. And on the little rotten boat there is no chance to escape...
The room I had were 10 $ and maybe 4$ worth. It was small, dirty, masses of termites were in my bathroom, the aircondition was ancient and so loud you can't use it.
Concerning the restaurant in 'Hotel 31', it's obviously that westerners gets poorer food than the local people next table.

The Good:
- It's cheap
- The staff was reasonably friendly
- Decent food
- The AC worked
The Bad:
- The room was pretty dingy
- I was scared to look under the bed
- AC was friekin' loud
The Ugly:
- Some guy - sounds like the one called ''the boss'' by another reviewer - bugged us non-stop to sign up for his tour. I can't remember if he was ugly or not, though.

on the 21/01/08, cameras, money and other things were stolen from 2 different rooms, where 2 couples (spanish and french) were staying.
they used the keys to go inside the rooms, so it could be some of the stuff (don't know).
police came, and did nothing to help. i still remember the lady's smile when the police left.
avoid at all costs.

The room was great and the restaurant too but the ''boss'' offered us a tour that turned out to be way too expensive and different from what we agreed (the 1st market was great, but we arrived at the 2nd market too late and there wer no boats left + the boat was sooooo slow (on purpose). When we complained, he disappeared.

Huy Hoang Hotel

This very popular backpacker joint is a typical Chinese-style hotel with oodles of featureless, bland rooms with squishy mattresses and passable bathrooms. For the money, it is isn't too bad, but for a little more, Hotel 31 next door is far better value. The restaurant here is used by the Saigon... more
