As with the Huy Hoang next door, Hotel 31 (so-named due to its street address) is a popular stop with the Saigon tour-group mob scene, with its two-level restaurant filling up to bursting with tourists at lunch time. These temporary crowds aside, this is a very good value hotel with the streetside rooms big enough to play volleyball in and reasonably clean (though they could learn to sweep under the bed once a decade). Streetside rooms also have a small veranda. With rooms this large, it is hardly worth going for air-con as the room never really cools down, but fan with the veranda doors open should be adequate. As with the Huy Hong, the staff here are quite jaded.

By that we mean they show up, in person, and pretend to be either be a potential guest, or somebody looking for a room for a friend or relative. Where possible the researcher will inspect at least a couple of rooms. Good, Bad, Ugly - 2nd February, 2008
The Good: - It's cheap - The staff was reasonably friendly - Decent food - The AC worked The Bad: - The room was pretty dingy - I was scared to look under the bed - AC was friekin' loud The Ugly: - Some guy - sounds like the one called ''the boss'' by another reviewer - bugged us non-stop to sign up for his tour. I can't remember if he was ugly or not, though.

Beware of the boss - 1st January, 2010
We paid $7 for a double with fan in the building tucked away from the Ngo Duc Ke Street in a narrow street. In the room there were many ants. The room was a bit smelly but all together it was ok for that price. Beware of the boss! He told us the audacious lie that there is no ferryboat from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc at 1pm any more (he knows that for sure because his brother works for that company), only the one in the morning. Therefore we should take a private car which he could offer us.

GOOD AND BAD - 2nd November, 2007
The room was great and the restaurant too but the ''boss'' offered us a tour that turned out to be way too expensive and different from what we agreed (the 1st market was great, but we arrived at the 2nd market too late and there wer no boats left + the boat was sooooo slow (on purpose). When we complained, he disappeared.
