This hotel was so new when we visited in October 2005 that you could still smell the paint drying. The Tay Ho has the top floor of four shop fronts running along the waterfront with spic and span rooms with great views at back-to-basics pricing. You'll get no fancy decor, but a spotless bathroom and a well-sized room with a simple bed, air-con and TV. The big hit here is the long terrace overlooking Hai Ba Trung St and the river. This could easily become the flashpacker choice in town -- they just need to get a few tables and chairs out there. While the river rooms are priced higher, if occupancy is low they'll drop the rates in the blink of an eye. Recommended.

Pushy, pushy, pushy - 5th November, 2007
This place is okay - nothing special, but clean and pleasant enough. The problem is the manager or whoever the guy at the front desk is. We've had some pushy hotels in Vietnam, but this guy takes the biscuit. He refused to even show us a room until he'd told us all about his tours (took more than 10 minutes) Once we decided to stay - and told him clearly that we weren't interested in tours - he wouldn't let us even go to our room until he'd sat us down for a hard (and long) sell on the tours again. Then he tried again after we'd freshened up and left the place to get dinner. Then - this is the amazing bit - he followed us around on his moped trying to sell his tours! He actually stalked us! We were furious, but he never gave up. This went on for days, until we organised our own tour and then he vanished. Incidentally, don't bother with any of the package tours - just hire a honda driver from the waterfront to take you to the more outlying markets - much more fun and no tourists.

Marriage certificate - 4th February, 2010
We had booked one of the rooms there for two nights but they kicked us out in the middle of the first night for we did not have the stupid marriage certificate with us. So do be careful if you don't have the paper. They do not care if you are foreigners or Vietnamese. Anyway, it was expensive and horrible. The bed was hard and the blanket was smelly. The door and window are out of date. A completely wrong choice from Travelfish!

Dirty and smelly - 29th January, 2010
We had booked the reservation for two nights. The only thinking in our mind on the first step into the room was : DIRTY AND SMELLY. The blanket was so smelly that we asked for change. The other one was a bit better but we could not use it any way! you will be kicked out if they (the hotel) find out that you and your boyfriend do not have some paper called marriage certificate. I tried to understand how stupid the reception was! I respect the Vietnam law for the fact that they prevent spruces. But there are thousands of hotels - resorts in vietnam accept couples without the silly certificate to be in the same room. we were kicked out the day after when the reception gay asked us if we had the stupid paper. I was talking to myself : What the******is this? This had never been happened in my life before. We would become stupid people if the meanwhile we believed in him that there was no place for us to enter. This is just experience. I think you need to be careful when you decide to spend your holidays here in the hotel otherwise they will kick you out if the police comes and check for your marriage certificate. Then you would get in a big trouble because vietnamese police doesnt speak english. This hotel had twice experience so police is always looking at them!

Dirty & awful! - 29th April, 2009
This is one of the few times that a Travelfish review has been terribly horribly wrong! But I'll just assume that things have gone downhill since the last TF visit. Our room was large but looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The bathroom had mold and spiders in the corners. The whole room was crawling with ants! Our first night there was disasterous and I didn't sleep at all. The window in our room looked out into the hallway and the light was left on so light streamed into our room all night. The rooms aren't very sound proof and there were very loud guests downstairs yelling and banging doors through all hours of the night. The hotel staff didn't do anything about it and we were too scared to try to do anything about it. The staff were pleasant but not friendly. A woman associated with the hotel wanted to take us on a boat trip but she asked for more than double the going rate if you arrange your own boat trip by the river.

very pleasant - 11th September, 2006
Can't fault the rooms. Definitely second the comment about the chairs & tables - the terrace is a fantastic place for people watching. Watch out for a pushy boat trip agent when you check in - be sure to check out other options before going with him.
