Tropicana

What we say:
One of the longest-running resorts on Long Beach, the Tropicana has lush gardens sprawling across a large block of land down to the beach. There's a big terrace area with a refreshing pool and an attached restaurant with pool table. Bungalows are rather unusual -- fronted by a brick archway, which add privacy, but pretty much guarantee you won't be doing any tanning on your deck. Inside, they're a little overfurnished, making the rooms feel claustrophobic. The starched ornamental trim at the top of the four-poster beds is particularly unattractive. Bathrooms are looking rather dingy, and have aubergine-purple fixtures. Families seem to like the place, perhaps for the pool and the large buffet breakfast -- we can't see why else they'd come. All rates include breakfast.

Not anymore!
This place does not exist anymore - we stayed at Phu Quoc just last week and walked past it several times. Tropicana is closed down, apparently to build a 4-star-resort at this place - that's what we were told.

Decreasingly Attractive The Longer We Stayed
We just stayed at Tropicana for five days, and unfortunately our stay wasn't quite as delightful as the other reviewer's. With five people, we took the ''family'' bungalow in the back that had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large living space and porch. For every good, there ended up being an equal bad: large rooms, but had mice who ate any food (and even soap) that was left out, including triple-bagged protein powder; 24-hour-pool, but no lights around it; wi-fi, but power was turned off throughout the day, including early morning and from 3-5pm, and even at 10:30pm one night when my wife was still using the hotel's computer; good beach access, but lots of natural waste plus rice bags; open beach huts for relaxing, but they were in desperate need of repair; complimentary breakfast - NOT a buffet, but the omelets appeared too fast with runny egg whites; the food in general was terrible, bland, and overpriced - go to the fantastic Night Market in town for fresh, cheap, and delicious food; the workers were kindly, and cleaning staff did a good job daily, but until our last two days they would wake us up at 9:30 or 10:00 to over-eagerly do the cleaning; pool-table was available, but so weather-worn that balls rolled inwards from the edges, and the pockets were actually plastic bottles. Overall the place just felt like it needed a general revamp from its owner, and yet the staff told us they were already completely booked for all of December...

garden paradise
I had a garden bungalow for $25 a night, less I think than the usual price. It was just starting to be the wet season so not at all crowded and I loved it. I can imagine that it might be noisy in the high season. The electricity was sometimes off during the day but I had a bathroom, fan, balcony and the delightful garden. They have a swimming pool, if the beach isn't enough, and play volleyball everyday; the staff are pretty good. I thought the food at their restaurant was quite good too. They will pick you up and return you to the airport and do a run into town every day.
