Nhat Lhan
Last before the rocks

What we say:
Located just on the other side of some boulders from Thousand Stars Resort, Nhat Lhan is a welcoming spot for budget travellers. It has two rows of brick bungalows set on either side of a lush tropical garden of coconut palms and bird of paradise flowers. Bungalows have thatched roofs and small verandas, each with its own pair of hammocks. Rooms are basic, especially bungalows off the beach, which have just a fan and cold shower, but are clean and functional. It's not a place you'll come for style and comfort, but for travellers on a budget, it's a great chill-out spot.

Ignore the good review!
This place is terrible! I checked in for one night and left by 6am the next day after spending the night on a bed that felt damp to begin with, and after a storm during the night shared my bed with a massive puddle of water due to the leaking roof! Ants and cockaroaches are also what you will be sharing your room with, it's not very clean, the lights in the bathroom only worked if you hit the wall, and the bathroom door would not close and had no handle. As mentioned, the owner makes prices up on the spot and after not budging from $8 to $7 even though I said I would stay a long time, I found out the girls right next door to me were only paying $7 while some others were paying $10! Moved that morning straight to lien hiep thanh and could not be happier. Rooms are not only far far cleaner and incl fridge to chill your drinks, linen is changed daily and the staff are amazing - all for the same $8! Sadly nhat lan has also made it's way into the guide books as a place to stay which I think many rely on - this was definately the worst accomodation I've had in all my Vietnam travels from north to south and I will be spreading the word that it's one to avoid!

is this the same place??
I am very surprised reading previous reviews, I had nothing but good experience staying her. The prices have gone up though, $25 for bungalow woth fan and cold water, $35 with aircan and hot water, and $15 for rooms that are now bungalows. I found staff to be helpful and friendly, the food in the restaurant superb, and certainly as good, if not better than other restaurants close by. I stayed for 8 days in a no aircon bungalow, and have nothing but praise for the service, the friendliness, the food, the location, and the wonderful amazing beach. No hesitation in recommending this place if you are looking for a budget place to stay.

Nhat Lan's Yin and Yang
I didn't make reservation b4 leaving. Got to the island and was taxied to various hotels (I was the driver's added-passenger whom he picked up at the port along with his other booked guests who had reservations to these hotels). I was able to make quick ''walk-ins'' while he unloaded his passenger. I kept a mental notes of which one i liked; Nhat Lan happened to be the last stop and the one i picked -- mainly for its price and its private setting; $12 for the beach front cottage. I was going to spend only 2 days in PQ but stayed for 7 days due to the serenity of the island and due to the reasonable affordable-priced accommodation. 1) i agreed about the owner's making up the prices; at first he wanted $18 but I negotiated to $12. When I decided to extend my stay, I used his ''authority'' to fluctuate the prices to his disadvantage, I got the same cottage for $10 (i guess being able to speak the same language helped too). 2) The food there is above-average (don't forget to try the iced vietnamese coffee); the prices are good; the waitresses are helpful. 3) I see that a lots of people are recommending the beach massagers, I tried them and wasn't really impressed. I guess you get what you paid for ($5/hour): the setting wasn't relaxing, the sand get to you and stick to you because of the oil they used; the ants from the the coconut trees somehow got onto you. I cut it short after 40 minutes (rather soaking in the warm sea water) 4) I rented the scooter ($4/day)from the front desk people; which I really advised people to do. (every towns in VN I stayed I always rented one -- cheaper and more mobile than taxi) 5) the cottage itself is good for the price; initially I got taken aback w/out the AC and hot water, but the cool breeze helped and the water is not as cold as here in USA so it is tolerable. 6) I will stay there again for the price, the location (isolate but fancier hotels are next door; which I walked up to every nite for their western-atmosphere lounge for a cocktail. I don't think dealing w/ the owner regarding prices is a big hassle...you need to know how much you are willing to pay and stick to your gun. Ask to view the room first before making your offer. That's all folks....have fun traveling.

Probably not the best adress
tucked away and close to the beach. Bungalow had a leaking roof and broken airvans. Hard bed. We ate dinner twice in nearby restaurant ''Ceasar's place''. We rent some scooters through our guesthouse and they drove perfectly. Don't consume laundryservice in this guesthouse. Our clothes smelt better before we gave them for washing. The owner just maked a guess of the amount (kilos). Is was proposterous.

One to avoid
There's roughly 20 huts of varying age and quality here, with dorm rooms available in the first building as you enter. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the owner (about whom more later) makes up the prices on the spot, so expect to pay anywhere between $10-$25 (dorms about $6) depending upon the season and his mood. While the young restaurant staff are friendly and sweet, though often incompetent, the owner of this place is a rude, ignorant moron that is unfortunately something of a Vietnamese speciality. Upon my asking to be moved closer to the beach, he held court in front of a coterie of giggling imbeciles like a 16th Century Renaissance duke, before, after much mocking of me deciding that I could indeed move - but for an extra $5/night (I was already paying $20). I refused this (he had agreed the same $20 previously), and eventually he relented (to much laughter and gesticulating towards me). I would have left the place were it not that the island was full to the brim (I had spent half the day looking for alternative accomodation). My hut near the beach was basic (no problem here, I knew that and didn't mind). What I did mind was the broken and flooding toilet (which I asked to fixed and wasn't), and the cockroach invasion. Obviously, I can hardly recommend this place. The owner is unfriendly, the accommodation overpriced for what it is, and much better options are available. But, when at peak season, you sometimes don't have many options ...

Detestable reception
3 weeks before our coming we called to book and the day before leaving home, to confirm, too. At our arrival in Phu Quoc airport, we called again to get the best way to come to the Resort. But at the reception, the guy said ''Sorry, we have no place for you''. In fact he even had our name in his book ??!!?? The taximan told us that he had seen the same many times at that place. So be vigilant about reservation at Nhat Lhan. Fortunately 30 minutes later we found Thai Tan Tien resort, and we enjoyed Phu Quoc.

Great disappointment!
Nice bungalows, but cockroaches in the bathroom, no toilet paper and it was a big problem for the staff to organise fresh towels after a few days. Unfortunately they try to make money out of everything! Renting a motorbike is, compared to other hotels, very expensive. Prices for bungalows change every day, it depends on tourists, if they ''like'' them or not.

Life is wonderful at Nhat Lan
Perfect place to stay. Escape from busy Vietnam and chill on Phu Quoc at Nhat Lan. Very friendly staff. Their English is getting better and better. Food is lovely and the price is cheap. I just wanted to stay for five days but I stayed three weeks and after two months I went back for another 10 days... I love the place in combination with the staff. Do you like to play chess? Then ask for Michel... the guy is a character.

Great place to stay
Stayed here 4 nights. Perfect position. Food great. Staff very friendly. Rooms basic but comfortable. Had the front bungalow. Six metres to water. Lovely front balcony to watch sun set. Looked at a few other accommodation options on Long Beach and were basically similar for a bit more cost. Very private at end of beach. Massage ladies were fun. Did not hassle too much and were friendly. Short walk at night to other bars and restaurants along beach. Will return.
