Ben Ngu Guest House
We wish we'd stayed here

What we say:
Ben Ngu Street is home to the 'market of strolling vendors,' and the whole area constitutes a very pleasant place to stay. Situated off the market road, we found this motel-style guest house and wish we'd stayed here on our visit. Clean rooms with a good atmosphere is a quiet, leafy courtyard with ample parking if you're travelling in your own vehicle. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating -- they can arrange tours, but English is minimal. Although there's a sign indicating the way to the guest house at the end of Ben Ngu Street, on our visit, the gate was locked, but you can find the place by using one of the sidestreets to the south of Ben Ngu along Le Hoan and heading east. Recommended.

charming with some drawbacks
A charming neighborhood and an attractive courtyard, and with reasonable, well-furnished rooms. The owners were delightful and as helpful as they could be: they have no english at all but with miming and my tiny bit of Vietnamese we managed. They were astonished to see me there. I stayed 3 days and they were happy to empty my rubbish when I took it to them, give me a clean towel when I asked and sweep and damp mop my room when I tried to borrow a broom. The rats in the ceiling were disconcerting but I found I could get them to stop running round if I put on the noisy aircon, though it just provided a very cold spot on my bed and the room stayed hot. I never saw a rat in my room (though I did see one in the Sao Mai restaurant.) I didn't have hot water most of the time but the weather was so hot it didn't matter much. After the 3rd night I had itchy bites. While the place was generally quiet, when there was noise- a neighborhood domestic, nearby building, dogs barking and other patrons staying up all night playing cards and drinking- the noise was quite intrusive. The owners warned me about pickpockets in Ben Ngu street. But it's a rare opportunity to feel as if you are living in a local community.
