Not overly impressed
South of the market, just west of the bus station, Bac Ha
Lao Cai Province
Tel: (020) 880 222

Description
The Minh Quan overlooks the market, but the only views you get are from the exterior balcony, not from the rooms themselves. We were not overly impressed with the quality -- thin mattresses, whiffy bathrooms, typical wooden furnishings and small broadcast TVs. All the rooms have twin beds only. Not a great deal.

Total rooms: 22

Dbl A/C private b'room
140,000 Dong (low season) 140,000 Dong (high season)

Ngan Nga Hotel
West of the Market, along the main road, Bac Ha
This place is most notable for its downstairs restaurant, a popular place for an early breakfast or late drink. If you're willing to sacrifice market views, you'll get a cleaner room and a softer bed here for slightly more than at the Minh Quan. The rooms are 'Vietnamese standard' with acceptable... more

Dai Thanh
House 5, Bac Ha (west of the market, along the main road)
Cheap is the watchword at the Dai Thanh. The lobby and hallways are rather comically cluttered, dusty and strangely noisy, but the rooms are clean. No English is spoken. This is the place to go if all you want to do is sleep cheap (we trust things quiet down during the... more

Hoang Vu Hotel
Nga 5, West of the market, along the main road, Bac Ha
The lobby here looks like a good place for Chinese businessmen to hang out and drink tea while making deals -- about 100 years ago. But the rooms are good -- spacious, with little, low tea tables average shower bathrooms with hot water and nice views from some of the balconies. This place is run by... more

Tan Nguyet Guest House
Bac Ha 6 (Road to the market, south of the square)
We wound up staying here and lucked out. The rooms are basic, but clean and roomy, with just what you'd expect in terms of hot-water shower bathrooms, comfortable beds and bedding, though typical amenities like complimentary toothbrushes are lacking. Still, the best value for the price of all the... more
