Description
The two-star Sao Mai is tour-group central. Done in a nod to stilt house style, it's really just a typical, L-shaped box around a courtyard, done up in a more-attractive-than-usual way. This continues on into the interiors, with lots of wood panelling, good furnishings, and just your typical Vietnamese shower/bathrooms. The rooms get bigger and better the more you pay, but the standards are just fine for the night, and reasonably priced for the market. They also have sauna and massage services, as well as a tour agency -- however, they do most of their trade in large group tours, so you might do better off wandering across the street to Sapa Green Travel in the Hoang Yen Bar for a customised, private tour.

Congfu Hotel
West of the market, along the road to Can Cau, Bac Ha
What's in a name. Good English is spoken here, and no, their lips don't move completely out of sync with what they're saying. Based on the success of their restaurant, the Congfu 'conglomerate' opened up a very nice midrange place in February 2008 with market views from six of their 21 rooms.... more
