If you've heard anything good about the Cat Cat Hotel, it should now be applied to the Cat Cat View Hotel, which is under the original ownership, under a new name. If you've heard anything bad about the 'Cat Cat Hotel,' there is a place operating next door that has bought up all the crappy rooms from the old Cat Cat and is now doing the name an injustice by running the place poorly. The Cat Cat View is an absolutely lovely place, with great rooms and great views. Despite its size, it's actually family run, and they do a very good job in terms of service -- everyone we met staying here just raved about it. It used to be renowned for the long climbs up to the best rooms at the top, but, happy news, they now have an elevator to the seventh floor. Getting to the eighth floor at the top, well, you're on your own. Renovations and expansion work are ongoing but both are being undertaken relatively unobtrusively. The rooms we saw were very homey, with good beds, pleasant bathrooms, little framed photos on the wall, and wood-burning fire places. You may get some smoke blowing back into the room when the wind shifts, but that's part of the experience. There's also a restaurant at the top that serves good food, Chinese beer, and excellent coffee in big mugs. The superior and deluxe rooms include complimentary breakfast. Highly recommended.

Good overall value - 4th September, 2009
Booked here for a superior room on the top floor (30 USD), the weather was nice so we didn't require any heating. Good rooms with nice mattresses, mosquito nets. Lack of maintenance (some lights were not working, broken stuff in the bathrooom). Very nice view on Sapa valley on the small terrace, and the restaurant was also good value. Staff not particularly friendly but helpful.

Fun even in the fog! - 17th March, 2009
This hotel has lovely staff and nicely appointed rooms - even though it was a foggy, cold night (and we lost power for about an hour), my husband and I really enjoyed this place. The electric blanket was a nice touch which made us warm enough that we didn't even need to start a fire in the fireplace. The room was nicely appointed and felt cozy which made us feel like we had a bit of luxury during our backpacker holiday. The restaurant is also a nice touch - the breakfast was great! A bit pricey perhaps though worth a few extra dollars - if weather is clear, the view will be worth it...and if the weather isn't good, you may want to cozy up in a nice room after a damp, foggy day. Also worth mentioning that it's one of the closest to Cat Cat Village (and also near the market) - it's close to things but not right in the middle of the action (read: touts).

Beautiful location - 25th March, 2007
Sapa is gorgeous, and the Cat Cat Hotel offers a great vantage point from which to see the surrounding area. No fewer than five sets of stairs lead you from reception to the restaurant and your room, each with a patio and a fireplace. OK restaurant. But it's really the views that grab you, once the mist clears. Don't let the stairs turn you off - if you're in Sapa, get ready for some ascents. Warning: the rooms can be very cold, and the basket of firewood turns to ashes very quickly.

The staff treated me well - 24th February, 2010
Stayed at the Cat Cat View for two and a half days and I was a bit worried after reading the previous reviews saying the staff was apathetic but I ended up having a great experience. The patio restaurant/bar in the upstairs area was a particular highlight. The food was quite good and, in spite of it having an amazing view and being inside a hotel, the prices are actually lower than most of the similar restaurants on the main strip. I paid $20 for a single room, but ended up in a large double off one of the huge shared balconies on the 7th floor. I emailed the hotel about coming and they had a driver with my name on a sign at the Lao Cai train station for about $1.50 extra. I asked about walking to nearby Cat Cat Village and they gave me directions and a map. I asked about other tours and they said they are the same price for a group of like 4 or 5, so they seemed expensive for a single person. Still, the staff treated me well both in the restaurant and at the desk. Two minor negatives: Wifi signal on 7th floor was weak or down, but strong and fast in the lobby. And even though I requested the $20 single room without breakfast by email, they had me in the $25 single with breakfast deal the first day somehow. Probably not a bad deal for a couple, but paying $5 for one of their basic breakfasts that is literally about $2 on the main menu is a bit of a ripoff. Better breakfast options are around $3 on the menu so skip the included one. Oh, and I was there in early February so I was worried about the cold at night, but it was about 20C during the day and maybe 12C at night, so I didn't have to use the fireplace.

Overall, a decent deal if you can forego any contact with staff - 1st February, 2010
We paid $20/night for the basic double room. Overall, a decent deal for a clean, nicely decorated, and spacious room with a shared balcony, and the staff did quickly move us to a different room on our first morning when the hot water didn’t work. One big caveat: the staff, with the exception of one of the women, were overall unhelpful and unfriendly. Took them much too long to bring wood to the room---not ok in the dead of the winter. They have a computer for guests, but the staff plays video games all day, and make guests feel evil for asking to use it. And at reception, they can’t be taken away from their online billiards game to give any suggestions on tours, travel, food, or to answer any other questions. Not what you expect from a family-run hotel. But, still, the fireplace is lovely and the rooms do feel cozy, and the electric blanket really keeps you warm through the winter nights. The bathrooms are nice with tubs big enough for a proper bath. Don’t let them try to put you in the “fish tank” on the 7th floor—the entire room is one big window and you’re completely exposed and frozen—and know that, in the winter, the 7th floor rooms are really cold and the fireplaces are on the opposite side of the room as the beds. The restaurant is not as good and costs more than other places in town. So, overall, it was just fine when we were in our room, but I wish I would have given my money to a friendlier place.

Cold Hotel and Service. Watch the Construction. - 26th January, 2010
The hotel and rooms are nice enough, but I must agree with previous negative items noted from January posting. The treatment from the staff, the rooms and the hotel lobby were very cold. True there are fireplaces in lobby and rooms but they are cannot be used because it would be ''too smoky'' (it was not windy...the staff just really didn't want to put the fire on). And one other note that really can't be helped by the hotel, but there is some major road work going on along this street making it very muddy. There are large ditches that you will have to cross via makeshift planks to enter the hotel.

Incredible views and a very nice room - 3rd June, 2009
The Cat Cat is one of the few places I booked ahead on our Vietnam trip and I'm glad I did. The views here are wonderful and you can always walk up to the decks on the next level to get even higher if you like. Our room was spacious and clean with an excellent bathroom and shower. It's close enough to the center of town to be a quick walk, but far enough away to be pretty quiet. We were right above their little cafe and would wander down in the morning for a quick bite to eat before heading out for the day. We arranged village tours through the front desk as well as a lift back to the train station in Lao Cai (they picked us up when we got there, as well.) My only complaint is from when we lost power for a few hours at night. It was explained to us that the water level behind the power dam was low, so they were conserving. Not a big deal since the rest of the town was without power as well, but the Cat Cat staff didn't do much more than put a few small candles in the very dark stairwells and hallways. Other places obviously had generators or had lots of candles out. Both my girlfriend and myself were very happy with Cat Cat, it may cost a bit more than the usual guesthouse dive, but it's worth it.

Stay well clear in Winter! - 3rd January, 2009
It's hard to believe the Cat Cat View Hotel where we spent a night late in December 2008 is the same place that's touted by Travelfish. We expected a great deal more for the price ($30) but got a dimly lit 'superior' double bedroom with only one chair and no rugs anywhere; a shower that looked nice but performed badly; a super noisy fan; and a TV that provided four fuzzy local channels. It was cold and there's no heat but the little bit that's served up by the smoky fireplace (fueled by an indiscriminate assortment of sticks and boards [many varnished])and by an electric blanket with balky controls. Admittedly the view is terrific and the rooftop restaurant is nice for breakfast, but that's about it.

SUCKED! - 6th January, 2008
i booked my room at the cat cat specifically based on these reviews. i'm here in january, so it's really cold in sapa. the rooms do not have heat. they have electric blankets, mine didn't work and the fireplace spilled a ton of smoke in the room. they charged me 25US/night while another guy down the hall got 15US per night. the first room they put me in had no bedding on the beds, creaking floors and the tv didn't work. i spoke with quite a few other guests and all had similar complaints of lying. also, the insisted on taking my passport when i arrived. i wouldn't let them, but it was a fight. i would absolutely not recommend this place until they get their act together.

Wonderful View! - 18th August, 2007
We stayed in a room on right top of the staircase. Sweeping view of Mt. Fansipan (unforgettable very early morning view - just like in paradise!). Big room, ok shower, friendly receptionist (inspite of her bad English)...

Fantastic Views, Great Rooms - 13th June, 2007
We had chosen Cat Cat as a ''possible'' but when we took our first glimpse of the stunning view we decided not to look anywhere else for a room in Sapa. Our room was reached by lots of steps (150 or so) but it was worth the climb. The rooms were spotlessly clean and BIG, we had two double beds in our room. It was quite chilly during our stay but we didn't use the fireplace instead we used the extra duvet from the spare bed and slept like babies!! The food in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced and the staff were eager to please. One thing to note about the staff though is that they are very young and enjoy kicking a football around on the communal terrace....not a good wake up call at 6.30am. We hired a bike from reception and had no problems whatsover navigating ourselves to the base of Fansipan and the nearby waterfalls....a good day out without the hoardes of tour groups. We recommended Cat Cat to everyone we met on our travels and would not hesitate to stay again.
