Description
The old Cat Cat Hotel sold off its ageing, less desirable rooms to another owner. For a while they operated side-by-side under the same name, but when service on the old side started deteriorating, the original owner changed the name of her side to the Cat Cat View Hotel to distance herself from the many complaints she was getting, but over which she had no control. So anything negative you might hear about the Cat Cat Hotel is much more likely to be directed at this place, and not the Cat Cat View, which is a lovely, well-run outift. Not that this is reason enough to not stay here. Reason enough is that the rooms are smelly, not so good, and the views are mediocre. Which is why the original owner was willing to dump them on someone else to begin with. It doesn't really merit a listing except to clear up the confusion -- the real Cat Cat you've heard good things about is one door down the hill. Go there, not here.

Cat Cat View Hotel
Cat Cat Road, Sapa
If you've heard anything good about the Cat Cat Hotel, it should now be applied to the Cat Cat View Hotel, which is under the original ownership, under a new name. If you've heard anything bad about the 'Cat Cat Hotel,' there is a place operating next door that has bought up all the crappy rooms... more

Mountain View Hotel
54a Cau May, Sapa
Squared away at the bottom of the main street on the valley side of Sapa, the Mountain View is budget conscious with a reasonable reward. Unsurprisingly, this place has great views of the mountain and from your room you can see virtually the entire sweep of the valley with Fansipan rising above it... more

Baguette and Chocolate Cafe and Hotel
Thac Bac, Sapa
Part of the Hoa Sua school for disadvantaged youth, the Baguette and Chocolate Hotel is mostly a cafe that has four select rooms above for training staff in hotel management. It sits up the road from the town square and craft market in a French-style villa. Inside the rooms are bright and cheerful... more

Auberge Hotel
Muong Hoa, Sapa
This is a fine old place with a French-speaking staff, built in the style of many mountain-top retreats from the colonial period -- it's the one place in town that actually feels like Bach Ma or Ba Na Mountain. The reception area climbs up the hillside, but the rooms are centred around an upper... more

Gecko Restaurant and Hotel
Thac Son, above the church, Sapa
The Gecko is noted for its food more than for its rooms. We found the offerings here a bit spare, though spacious. You'll get broadcast TVs, beds with soft foam mattresses and very plain bathrooms. Some of the rooms feature teeny, tiny balconies. It's run by a Frenchman who is one of the few expats... more

Royal Sapa Hotel
Cau May, Sapa
This outfit is in a prime location at the base of Cau May -- a spot that guarantees prime views for the rooms facing east. But, funnily enough, it's sort of a lousy place to stay. The rooms themselves are clean and well fitted out, and worth the price, as long as you get a room with a view. But... more

Sapa Summit Hotel
Thac Bac, up near the top, Sapa
The Summit is not quite at the summit, but it is one of the last hotels you'll find along the road as you climb Thac Bac. It's run by the same company as the Prince 79 and 57 Hotels in Hanoi (which we found to have good service and affordable rooms), so if you book through their affiliate travel... more

Lotus Hotel (Huong Sen)
5 Muong Hoa (Pho Cau May), Sapa
This place sits right up against the Auberge, and features many of the same great views at good prices. The rooms are nothing special, but comfortable, with many of the cheaper rooms granting views only from the external corridor. But there are ample places to sit at cafe tables outside the rooms,... more
