Pinochio Hotel

A very popular backpacker option

This very popular backpacker option has a good reputation, and deservedly so. The vibe here is almost like a youth hostel, and the rooms provide the best combination of low prices and good views in town. They have six different types of rooms, but only the very cheapest have no views at all. The best rooms are spacious, with cable TVs, good furnishings and mediocre bathrooms with tubs. There's plenty of outside seating on cafe tables, making it a fine place to kick up your heels in the evening and meet other travellers. There's even a gym! Well, it's just a couple of concrete dumbells sitting on one of the shared balconies, but you can get an upper body workout in to balance out all that muscle you've been building in your legs. The friendly staff speak English well. Recommended.

Good value - 16th March, 2010
Stayed here two nights and the room was great! Large beds and a big bathroom. We paid $8 for a twin. Great view when the fog's gone! The duvets have seen better days but were clean and fresh. The owner is helpfull, for tours and sends her brother in for a motorbike tour. BUT: don't forget to ask for your passport when you leave Sa Pa! We forgot and they had to send it by motorbike to the train station!

No frills, but decent value - 22nd August, 2009
The boss is tough as nails, but she's nice when you get her to chill out. Staff are friendly. Rooms are okay, don't take the 6th floor if you can avoid it - it's just some clapboard stuck onto the flat roof. Overall, cheap, well-located, with a decent restaurant that has some interesting stuff on the menu ('Roast bird' gets you a plate of sparrows). There might be better in Sapa at this price, but this served us well for a week.

OK for the money - better options in town - 28th July, 2008
I stayed here for two nights and paid $10 for a double room. Staff is friendly and helpful, and the location is excellent but the rooms are a bit musty smelling and the staff is extremely loud early in the morning (like right outside your door) and it's hard to sleep past 6:30am due to the noise. Overall, there are nicer rooms available (with views) at other guest houses for the same amount of money. I don't think I'd stay here again.
