Situated at the Dien Bien Phu end of town, rooms at Hai Yen have a cosy feel and the atmosphere is welcoming. Although we showed up late in the day before the electricity for the lights was switched on — it comes on at 20:00 — and there was something a bit spooky though thrilling about being led up the dark stairs by a woman carrying a lantern. Anyway, rooms are well done out: freshly painted with light wood panelling, cheerful bedding and window shutters. Unfortunately the beds are hard but the bedding smells freshly laundered and the canopy mossy nets are cleaner than most so that compensates. There's cable TV and air-con (in most rooms) but the latter only comes on with the lights at 20:00 — a fan is available at other times. The two rooms at the top are doubles but rooms on the first floor can sleep up to three or four.
