As with most of the mini-hotels on Bui Vien, the Phan Lan has reasonable-sized rooms that are clean and well-furnished -- the streetside rooms cop a lot of noise, the back rooms are quieter. The Phan Lan distinguished itself with its super-soft mattresses. We found the staff a little offhand but they were doing a roaring trade when we visited regardless. All rates include breakfast.

Friendly and Clean - 11th December, 2006
This family run guesthouse is linked with the other Phan Lan around the corner and all staff are very helpful and accommodating. Long climb to the top floor, but they have a lift for your pack. Nice!

Clean and Accommodating - 3rd May, 2008
I stayed here on the 30th of April 2008, which was a holiday. Cheapest room they have is $16/night. The room I got overlooks the lobby, but it was alright as long as the staff do not play music too loud. Very clean, even the bathroom was **** and span. A/C, TV, hot water, free breakfast and free internet. The staff were helpful and cheerful. They have another branch tucked in an alley off Pham Ngu Lao. Seems quiter but i did not get to stay there.

Ripped us off at New Year - 30th January, 2008
We prebooked this hotel at the end of December. Unfortunately our coach from Mui Ne had broken down so by the time we arrived it was too late to realistically find alternative. We were charged $35 for a room that was only worth $10. The lady there said it was because it was New Year, however, none of the hotels we enquired with the next day charged more than their normal rate. When we told her we were moving, she just smiled and offered to reduce it to $30. No thanks. We went to a hotel called the Spring House around the corner, a real gem of a find. A lovely double room with A/C, new and clean bathroom and TV for just $20 a night. If you can get a room at Phan Lan for $10 it's clean enough, but otherwise don't waste your time.
